The LilyPad Arduino UNO is a board that has been designed to be woven, sewn or otherwise integrated into clothing, textiles and wearable accessories. It utilizes the mega32u4 microchip that is consistent with the Arduino UNO basic board, but is bendable, more compact and is even resistant to typical washing or cleaning damage.

Rather than being square, the LilyPad is round in shape, with the I/O pins appearing as “petals” around the edges. These petals are filled with copper, and allow for users to sew Conductive Thread through them and into other Electronics Components like LED’s. This presents amazing opportunities for interactive, technology-rich clothing and accessories that react to motion, temperature or even the environment around the wearer.

The LilyPad is not designed to be large or powerful, but rather to be discrete and easy to integrate into clothing. As such, it features a minimal approach, running at 8MHz clock speed, 14 digital I/O pins, 6 analog pins, a reset button and an FTDI connector. The back of the board is also flat, designed with wearable comfort and low visibility in mind, so that the Arduino Board can be hidden beneath a layer of clothing without scratching skin or being blatantly visible to others.

Typical Applications for the Arduino LilyPad UNO:

While other boards have been designed with more open-ended uses, the LilyPad Arduino UNO board has been specifically crafted with creative intent. This of course means that there are thousands of possible uses for these textile-centric microcontroller boards. From LED integrated shirts that are sensitive to touch, all the way through to gloves that wirelessly operate mechanical appendages, these boards are only limited by the imagination of the owner.

Common projects that users who are new to LilyPads could enjoy include:

  • Clothing and accessories that are sensitive to heat, touch or sound
  • Accessories that track your heart beat or pulse and displays the figures on an LED wrist-screen
  • A glove and shirt that senses when you’re holding hands and lights up a heart on the chest
  • LED-integrated clothing that lights up when it gets dark – ideal for joggers, cyclists or just for people who like to fun

Some more experienced inventors and tinkerers have also truly unleashed the creative possibilities of LilyPads, and some of the more complex projects include:

  • Gloves that act as wireless controllers for video games or to control mechanical limbs
  • Electronic “jewellery” that shifts colours and changes over the course of the evening
  • Sets of clothing that wirelessly connect and interact with each other when within range
  • “Pet” accessories that wrap around wrists or over shoulders and make cute sounds when stroked or petted.

While these ideas are brilliant, there are still so many more ideas just waiting for someone to think them up. So if you’re interested in experimenting with your creativity with technological textiles, a LilyPad Arduino UNO is the ideal starting point, and can be efficiently utilized by both beginners and experts alike.

When it comes to building unique electronics projects, there are few better ways to do it than with Arduino. Founded with the intent to make electronics prototyping accessible to all, regardless of age, culture, sex or any other factors, Arduino is one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of open-source hardware and software.

Some of the leading microcontroller boards that Arduino has produced include the classic Arduino UNO, as well as many variations with different specialisations and specifications. Some of the most popular Arduino boards – which we stock of course – are the Arduino Mega, Leonardo, Due, Micro, Nano, Mini, as well as the unique Arduino LilyPad. And with these boards at hand, as well as a Shield or two, you can craft thousands of different projects, with each one being tailored to your specific needs, wants and personal tastes.
