The reason why these ribbon cables are quite popular amongst prototypers within the field of Hobby Electronics is because of the convenience that they offer. In addition to fitting 10 individual connections in a very small and sleek form factor, these cables can flex around tight corners quite well, with the only real downfall of these cables being the fact that they can’t bend sideways. However, with that being said, they can be folded almost in half while still offering a good connection, meaning you can fold them and bend them within tight electronics enclosures, without worrying about the same strain that bending would cause to a typical round cable.

These ribbon cables are typically used alongside 10-Pin IDC Connectors, which are ideal for terminating all of the lines of a ribbon cable with specialised fork connectors. These fork connectors subtly break through the ribbon cable insulation while forming strong connections by “grabbing” the cables between the prongs, allowing you to break out all 10 connections as individual signal or supply lines.
