As hobbyists, we can truly appreciate the value of components, modules and boards with tiny form factors, as they allow us to build discrete projects in neat and tidy enclosures that we can hide away to make our projects look like pure magic!
This is why we’re eager to add the Beetle to our catalogue, which is designed to be The Smallest Arduino available, offering the full power of an Arduino Leonardo, but with a tiny form factor of only 20x22mm. This let’s you build surprisingly powerful and multi-functional projects that you could discretely hide within small spaces or enclosures, like a wallet, computer mouse or even into a wearable bracelet.
The board has an ATmega32U4 as its brains and an onboard Micro USB port for downloading and testing libraries and code, with a lightweight population of components supporting 10 Digital I/O pins, 5 Analog input channels, as well as 4 PWM channels. This, while offering slightly fewer total ports and pins than the Leonardo, is typically enough to handle most hobbyist projects, with the small form factor and lightweight design offering a unique set of advantages that no other Arduino Boards can achieve.

The Beetle Arduino board from DFRobot has been built with the primary goal of achieving a tiny form factor while still offering impressive power and functionality. This has resulted in a board which is ideal for specialised projects that are tight on space but still need a reliable level of processing power, with some of the most common projects involving lightweight smart-wearables like smart-watches, fitbit bracelets and other cool technologies that we can integrate into our daily lives. However, they could also be used in place of full-sized Leonardo boards, and could simply offer the same computing standards you’re accustomed to, only in a much smaller and more discrete form factor.
Whether you’re building your own wearable tech’ or are eager to ensure that your next project is as small as possible, there are no other boards that can compare to the small size of the Beetle. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a similar kind of tiny board, but with built-in Bluetooth capabilities, you may also be interested in our Bluno Beetle V1.0, which is also built by DFRobot but is designed specifically for use within wearable technologies.

As self-proclaimed “Robo-holics”, DFRobot is a company comprised of over 100 staff members, of which 30% are engineers who love to build robots. It was started in 2008 with the goal of embracing and promoting open-source hardware, with a core focus on Arduino, Raspberry Pi and their very own LattePanda development boards. Since then, DFRobot have manufactured over 1300 unique modules, sensors and components that all work together and complement each other, allowing users like us to enjoy a full spectrum of cutting edge robotics and electronics without having to pay premium prices.
With the primary goal of developing and manufacturing great quality products, while making them accessible to as many people as possible, DFRobot are rapidly becoming one of the most common-place brands in the world of open-source robotics and electronics. With more than 1300 products developed in-house, and an impressive range of different categories and specialisations, there are few brands in the world who can compete in terms of quality, accessibility and genuine innovation.
