With the introduction of the FireBeetle ESP32 IoT Microcontroller from DFRobot, we have been excited at the prospect of an MCU board that offers the simplicity of Arduino, but with loads of extra features like built-in WiFi. However, until recently, the amount of accessories and extras have been somewhat lacklustre, and certainly couldn’t compare to the sheer mountain of different Arduino Shields and other goodies available, although it looks like things are about to change.

Introducing the simple but extremely handy FireBeetle Covers-Gravity I/O Expansion Shield, which is designed to fit directly onto the top of a FireBeetle MCU, and breaks out the useful Analog and Digital Pins, as well as the Power and Serial Interfaces. This makes building fresh new projects as easy as can be, as you can then simply plug in your Gravity Series 3-Pin modules and other accessories into their dedicated pin-sets, and then plug this FireBeetle Cover directly into the top of the FireBeetle MCU.

One of the biggest benefits of these FireBeetle I/O Expanders is that each digital and analog pin featured on the FireBeetle has been broken out to have its own dedicated VCC, GND and DATA pins. This means that you can plug in up to 15 sensors or other Modules without having to tie VCC and GND together or create power lanes on a separate protoboard. And while dedicated pin-sets may not be extremely valuable when working with only one or two modules, if you plan to create a vast sensor network or complex project with multiple different modules attached, this “Small” cable management benefit can go a long way in terms of convenience, efficiency and even the prevention of unnecessary damage from mistakes.
