While most models of 3D Printers require a computer to be connected in order to control the printing process, if you have built your own 3D printer with a RAMPS 1.4 Kit, you can utilise this RAMPS Graphical SD/LCD Control Panel to control it via a simple graphical interface, and print designs directly from SD cards. This not only removes the need for a computer in the printing process, but also allows you to put the printer in a completely different room – because sometimes the aromas and noises that come out of these printers can be distracting.

In addition to simply printing from an SD card via an easy-to-use graphical interface, this controller offers a 128x64 resolution LCD display, which is operated with a rotary encoder. It connects to a RAMPS 1.4 Arduino Shield via the included “smart adaptor” and provides enough power for the SD card as well. However, one of the biggest benefits of this controller is the fact that it allows for “on-the-fly” calibration, and you can adjust a wide range of variables while testing axes movements as well. This is ideal if you are taking your 3D printer to an exhibition, a fair, or even just a friend or colleague’s house, since it allows you to calibrate the printer for great prints, even after moving the entire machine to a different location.

For more information, the RepRap Wiki Page provides details on how to code and install this control panel.
