It not only offers a beautiful smooth finish, but can also be polished to make it even smoother so as to appear truly finished and ready-for-launch.

Finally, and this is possibly the best factor about eSmooth Filament, the prints produced with eSmooth are ideal for creating lost wax castings, as the eSmooth polymer is designed to turn into only gas when exposed to temperatures of around 600°C or more. As such, you can create moulds around printed objects, and then burn them out without leaving any carbonisation, residue or contaminants in the mould. After that, you can pour in molten metal or whatever other materials you like into the mould, which will slowly harden and take the form of the mould – of course without any blemishes or burnt particles that other polymers would typically leave after being burned out.

Extra Notes and Post-Processing eSUN eSmooth Filament:

eSUN’s specialised eSmooth polymer has been designed so that users can get an ultra-smooth finish by doing a bit of post-processing after the print is done. This post processing simply involves polishing the finished print with ethanol before hanging it to dry for a few days. However, there are some precautions that are important to consider, which are as follows:

  • The best way to Polish eSUN eSmooth prints is to use the old vapour-bath technique, but with ethanol instead of ABS juice. To do this, you will need a vat or tub for the ethanol to sit in, a grid for the part, and a small bubbler to agitate the ethanol. Place the bubbler in the ethanol and place the grid above the bath, then sit the part on the grid and close the container before turning the bubbler on. This will vapour-bath the part with a light layer of ethanol, which will eat away at any small bits or bumps that stick out, resulting in a beautifully smooth finish that simply can’t be achieved any other way.
  • After the vapour-bath, the prints should turn white and soft. Be careful not to bend them during this stage, and use tweezers to carefully hang the prints out to dry on a string or some kind of hanging tool. This will ensure maximum surface area for the ethanol to dry off.
  • Polished prints will typically take 3 to 5 days to dry, depending of course on the conditions they are left in. Humidity will obviously increase this time, while specialised drying containers will reduce this time.
  • Finally, do not dry the finished prints in an oven, as this will cause the solvent to volatise too quickly, and has a high chance of tarnishing the polishing effect, and may also crack the print from the rapid yet non-uniform drying.

While the post-processing of this filament may seem a bit complicated, it results in beautiful prints that can be used for high-quality demonstrations for important projects due to its unique finish. This is why it’s often used for 3D Printing product prototypes and models for CGI in movies or games, as well as for architectural and mechanical designs that are made to truly impress clients and customers.
