One of the most exciting aspects about 3D Printing is the constant development of the industry, on both professional and hobbyist levels, and how there are so many different types of 3D Filaments and exotic polymers that the large majority of Makers still haven’t even tried! A fine example of such a filament that many Makers have yet to experiment with is eSUN’s eBamboo Filament, which utilises the base polymer of PLA with real bamboo powder additive to offer an exceptionally unique set of characteristics and properties – that you can now turn into physical objects, parts, models or even toys.

When designing this Exotic Filament, eSUN was clever in using PLA as the base, as this makes the unique filament relatively easy to print with. Of course, there are some a few differences in regards to temperature, printing speed and other parameters, but all in all this filament was polymerised to offer the easiest possible experience while still maintaining amazing bamboo-like properties. And while other filaments often just look like the materials they’re designed after, this eBamboo looks, feels and even smells like real bamboo, making it a truly awesome filament to experiment and print with.

*Please Note: Although this filament uses a base PLA polymer, you may need to provide an enclosure or some kind of wind protection to prevent the polymer from cooling too quickly or unevenly.

Extra Notes for Printing eSUN 1.75mm eBamboo Filament:

3D Printing in any Exotic Filaments will typically require a few extra steps or precautions to take note of before you begin. Fortunately, eSUN eBamboo is not as tricky as POM or Nylon, but it does still need some extra care if you want your prints to turn out beautiful, neat and free from problems like stringing or clogs. As such, be sure to take note of the following before you begin:

  • Always be sure to clean your heatbed before each print, as the tiny bamboo powder particles can fall into the mechanical grip furrows of BuildTak and similar Adhesion Aids and lead to lowered first-layer adhesion.
  • Despite the PLA base polymer, eBamboo filament needs to have the part cooling fan turned off, and an enclosure or wind-blocker is recommended to avoid uneven cooling.
  • eBamboo Filament is quite unique in the way that different printing speeds and temperatures can greatly affect the colouring of the finished print. So experiment with various speeds and temp’s to see the many variations that are possible, and consider even changing these parameters for certain layers or sections of the print to give it a true wood-like aesthetic.
  • Finally, because this filament contains actual bamboo powder, it is more flammable than typical filaments, and may also require drying before prints to remove any moisture that the bamboo powder may have absorbed.

We have thoroughly enjoyed printing with this eSUN eBamboo filament, as well as experimenting with all of the different aesthetics, fill rates and potential applications, and we are certain that you will enjoy it just as much as we did when you decide that it’s time to start playing with a new type of exotic polymer.

Shenzhen eSUN Industrial Co., Ltd was established in 2002 in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and has rapidly become one of the leading international suppliers of 3D Printing Filament. They specialise in research, development and production of degradable polymer materials, and have grown their catalogue of filaments to include PLA, ABS, PC, PVA, and a wide range of other polymers and copolymers.

Their list of exclusive filament formulas include unique materials like wood, aluminium, bronze and other materials to create highly specialised filaments that can stretch, bend, be moulded or otherwise behave in very unique ways. Their filaments are also commonly characterised by their absolutely round shape, extremely low diameter tolerance, uniform colours and impressively stable melting points. These characteristics, in combination with their long-term insistent policy of “Best Quality, Reasonable Price” has garnered them a large share of the market, with their reputation commonly preceding them within knowledgeable online and offline 3D Printing communities.

eSUN’s popularity in the industry has also helped to produce sustainable partnerships with many internationally famous 3D Printer manufacturers and distributors, with DIYElectronics having sole distributorship rights to provide their 3D Printing Filaments to South Africa and neighbouring African countries.
