When it comes to experimenting with fresh, new and exciting polymers, many of the true Exotic Filaments on the market are quite daunting, with specialised print settings and a price that doesn’t always allow for cheap trial and error to get working just right. This is why we love getting in what we like to call “Semi-Exotics” like Fillamentum Timberfill Filament, which offers distinctively unique characteristics, but features an easy-to-print base polymer to ensure that you don’t have to tweak settings for days just to get your first good print.

The Fillamentum Timberfill Range is a beautiful collection of PLA-based WoodFill Polymers, which are comprised of as much as 30% wood powder. These additives give Timberfill some very cool properties, and actually make it look, feel and even smell like real wood, opening up amazing opportunities for 3D Printing custom “wooden” enclosures, containers, sculptures, jewellery and so much more – without ever having to touch a carving knife. Of course, it must be noted that this filament, despite using a PLA base, does require one minor tweak to get right, and this is the change to a larger 0.5mm nozzle, so as to accommodate the extra additives and fibres that are contained within the filament. Fortunately though, with that being the “hardest part” of 3D Printing with Timberfill, you can rest assured that, regardless of your skill level in 3D Printing, you will definitely be able to take full advantage of the incredibly awesome wood-like properties of Fillamentum Timberfill.

Compared to the other variants in the Timberfill range, these particular spools offer a subtle but elegant light wood tone, which is quite similar to a Maple, Ash and Oak woods, with an almost creamy light brown with very small specks of darker and lighter spots. This results in an extremely natural looking light wood that makes it a beautiful choice for small containers, impossibly “carved” necklaces and other items in which fragility boosts the beauty. However, while it may look quite lightweight from its aesthetics, it’s actually also quite strong, with the wood and PLA doing a good job to hold together and resist external forces relatively well.

Of course, with a core focus on ensuring precision consistency in ever spool produced, Fillamentum has rightfully garnered a position as one of the top suppliers of 3D Filaments throughout the world. From their vibrant range of Fillamentum PLA Extrafill to the exotic and extremely durable Fillamentum CPE CF112 Carbon, this amazing brand is not only passionate about quality, but is actually capable of delivering on this promise each and every time, without fail. This is why, regardless of what Fillamentum Polymers you’re choosing for your next project, you can expect excellent results with each and every one.

With unique aesthetics and a cool textures to complement, Fillamentum Timberfill Filaments are certainly some of the most exciting lines of 3D Filament that we have in stock, and we’ve been impressed by just how fun yet easy to print this beautiful filament has been.

Helpful Tips for 3D Printing with Fillamentum Timberfill Filament:

When thinking about whether to experiment with Wood Filament or simply stick to the easy-printing PLA polymer, it’s important to note that this filament has been designed specifically to offer the awesome easy-printing style of PLA, while still offering a truly unique and exotic effect. However, despite being almost as easy to print with as PLA, there are a few small nuances that you should know before diving in. Fortunately, we’ve collected some of the top insights and tips that we’ve gained over the years, so that we can share them with you here and make your life as a 3D Maker as easy as possible. As such, the following are some great tips that everyone, both beginners and veterans, should take a look at in order to help improve print quality and get the results that you want from your wood filament prints:

  • Wood PLA Printing Tips – Nozzle Sizes: When comparing Wood Filaments to the plethora of exotics available nowadays, we’ve found that wood filament is actually one of the easier exotics to use, as it uses PLA as a polymer, with relatively inert additives that don’t do much to change the overall printing difficulty. However, one small but important modification that we do recommend is to use a nozzle that is around 0.5mm or larger. This is because the wood particles and fibres featured in wood filaments are quite a lot larger than the PLA molecules, and as such can cause clogs or jams if the nozzle is too small. Fortunately, just one step up from 0.4mm is enough to accommodate the wood particles or fibres, and you don’t need any sort of special abrasion resistance either, as both wood and plastic are relatively soft compared to brass, copper and other standard nozzle materials.

  • Wood PLA Printing Tips – Temperature & Retraction Settings: If there is anything that could be considered difficult when printing with wood filament, it’s the fact that, depending on your 3D Printer setup, you will have to experiment with temperatures and retraction settings before committing to serious designs. This is primarily due to the interactions between the PLA plastic modules, the wood particles and the binding agents used to help keep it all together, as well as the fact that most Hobbyist 3D Printers are designed and set up with the main focus on standard PLA. Fortunately, because Makers are awesome, there are loads of Calibration Prints on Thingiverse that you can use to fine-tune these settings before printing anything large or important, and these are all designed to use as little filament as possible while giving you maximum calibration results.

  • Wood PLA Printing Tips – Post Processing is Key: Although Wood Filament typically produces some pretty impressive results just by being printed with the right settings and fine-tunings, it’s hard to ignore the incredible effects that post-processing can offer for 3D Prints, and this is particularly prevalent with wood filament. As such, we would like to share a fantastic Wood Filament Post-Processing Guide from MatterHackers, which covers the various ways in which you can sand, coat, seal or even stain your wood prints, so that you can get the perfect aesthetics that no other filaments can provide for your projects.

Additional Resources for 3D Printing Wood Filament:

Of course, with wood filament being such an awesome material to work with – both during a print and afterwards, it’s not surprising that there is a wealth of information available online on how to get your prints looking good. However, from all of the resources we’ve found over time, we feel that the following are the most valuable and beneficial for both beginner and veteran wood printers alike:

  • This is a basic but valuable Wood Filament Resource Guide from Simplify3D, which gives a brief overview of what makes wood filament different, what you might need to change or modify to print it effectively, tips and tricks on improving print quality, as well as some sample prints that look great when produced in wood filaments.
  • The next resource is the amazing Wood Filament Post-Processing Guide from MatterHackers, which offers a good range of different post-processing tips, tricks and techniques for wood filament, with each of these giving a different look, feel or structural benefit. If you love post-processing your prints, then wood filament, coupled with this guide, is one of the most enjoyable materials that you can get.
  • Printing with timberfill requires different nozzle sizes and this can get confusing for Makers new to this. If you're looking for more information on the best nozzle sizes to use with your wood filament, this Fillamentum Timberfill and Nozzles article is very informative.
  • And to top it all off, the following is just a great General Wood Filament Guide from All3DP, that covers all of the basics of wood filaments, what kinds of settings to focus on, how to troubleshoot your prints, and then touching on some post-processing at the end.

Fillamentum Timberfill Filament - 1.75mm Light Wood Tone 0.75kg

Starting in as early as 2013, but with roots that go even further than that, Fillamentum is a brand that actually began working in the automotive industry, before moving into the packaging industry, and then eventually arriving in (and specialising in) 3D printing, where they found their true passion. And as a company that has always placed a high priority on following innovation, they took to 3D printing like a fish to water, and since 2013, have been consistently introducing fresh new innovations to the industry in the form of new types of polymers, refinements to classic polymers, as well as hybrid polymers that blend in materials like wood for distinctively unique effects.

What we really love about Fillamentum and their awesome 3D filaments range, is that they offer true consistency even between hundreds or thousands of batches. In fact, they actually match many of their colours to specifically defined Pantones and RAL colours, which are universal colour standards that artists, designers and many other professionals commonly use for precision colour coordination. This of course is complemented by their consistent quality, with an impressive (and tested) 0.05mm tolerance throughout each spool, as well as consistent results from various colours across multiple batches during our own testing phases.

As a brand that clearly demonstrates its passion for 3D printing through it’s beautiful 3D filaments, we’ve been exceptionally impressed with Fillamentum, and we certainly won’t be too surprised if Fillamentum becomes your new favourite 3D filament for all occasions.
