PolyVinylChloride (PVC) was a laboratory mystery in the earlier 20th century until finally being labelled as one of the most important scientific discoveries of that time. With advanced mechanical properties, impact resistance and durability, PVC became widely recognised as the white plastic used in your home’s plumbing, windows, or containers. For the first time, PVC is produced as 3D Filament for Maker Hobbyists to use in functional ground-breaking projects (or a near invincible flower vase). Fillamentum is a brand known for bringing industrial level 3D filament, such as their Nylon and FlexFill 98A lines to the Maker community for you to experience the incredible features these materials have to offer. Fillamentum Natural Vinyl 303 is an exciting new material for advanced 3D printing with multiple applications.

Fillamentum made this Natural Vinyl 303 3D Filament from PVC to exhibit the material’s same qualities. One of Vinyl 303 print’s most impressive claims is a hardness of 78 Shore D which is the same as that of a construction helmet. With a resistance to traction and fire, printed Vinyl 303 parts are more reliable and less likely to erode from ambient heat, moisture and even certain natural chemicals – oils, salts and other solutions. In addition to these mechanical properties, Fillamentum Vinyl 303 PVC Filament is free of styrene which makes it possible for Makers to recycle. While considered an advanced material, this Exotic Filament does have good adhesion between layers and base, resulting in a beautiful surface finish. We recommend following strictly to the print settings below from Fillamentum themselves for the best possible results as well as for your safety.

Because of the chemical properties in PVC, safety precautions are necessary when working with this material. The process of 3D Printing is an intense one, heating the PVC filament between 215°C and 230°C in the nozzle onto a bed surface of at least 80°C. While harmless in its solid form, PVC 3D Filament will emit toxic fumes while printing, including hydrochloric acid. It is highly recommended to have a 3D Printer Enclosure and a well-ventilated room to avoid breathing in any fumes while printing. Also, like all PVC materials, 3D printed Vinyl 303 models should not be used for consumable items. Needless to say, this is not a 3D Filament for beginner Makers, requiring a well-tuned 3D Printer and ideally experience with other high-strength filaments such as ABS or Nylon. However, Fillamentum Natural Vinyl 303 PVC Filament has impressive features that make it ideal for customising prints for your Electronics Projects and can act as an insulation for wires and cables.

Warning: Fillamentum Vinyl 303 Filament may emit toxic fumes while 3D printing. We highly recommend to follow the Official Safety Recommendations while printing this material and do not allow these 3D Prints to come into contact with any consumable items.

Helpful Tips to Print Safely with Fillamentum Vinyl 303 Filament:

Fillamentum Vinyl 303 Filament is a fascinating material to print with, offering greater durability and impact strength to your functional projects and safe for electronic components. However, some Makers may not know that PVC is an advanced material which emits toxic fumes when being processed and may damage your 3D Printer if you are not careful. While that may sound scary, PVC Filament is actually not so difficult to print with as long as you follow the recommended precautions from Fillamentum. We put together a list of helpful tips to ensure you have the correct setup and settings to print safelty with Fillamentum Vinyl 303 Filament:

  • Protect Yourself – Printing with PVC Filament emits toxic fumes, including hydrochloric acid. For your safety, always print Vinyl 303 with a reliable 3D Printer Enclosure and in a well-ventilated room.
  • Protect Your 3D Printer – PVC may also damage your 3D Printer and cause clogging if left unattended. Here are some tips to ensuring your printer’s safety and avoid clogging:
    • Use a Brass Nozzle. Do not use a stainless-steel nozzle as this will be corroded by PVC.
    • A Bowden Style extruder is recommended.
    • Heat up the Bed before you heat up the nozzle.
    • Do not exceed 230°C.
    • Avoid printing small detailed models which may reduce print flow and cause clogging.
    • Reduce the time PVC filament remains in the nozzle by removing it immediately after printing. Heated PVC for over 10 minutes will carbonize and cause a very strong jam.
    • Your print bed must be well calibrated. A low bed level my cause a low print flow and risk clogging.
    • When cleaning the Nozzle, use the same printing temperatures or lower, never exceeding 230°C, as this will cause clogging. PLA Crystal Clear or Nylon FX256 are recommended cleaning materials.
  • Get Amazing Prints:
    • Adhesion – Print on a PEI or glass surface, using adhesion aids such as Magigoo or PVA based glue.
    • Cooling Fan – It is standard to print PVC at 15% cooling fan speed from layer 10. However, if your model has difficult overhangs and supports, you may increase the speed to a maximum of 20%, being careful of decreasing layer bonding. If you need to print a stronger part, turn off the cooling fan to print at 230°C so layers adhere even more.
    • Avoid Detail – Printing very small models
    • Additional Useful Settings – Printing with supports and a brim is recommended with Vinyl 303 PVC Filament to avoid print fails due to vinyl’s tendency to shrink while printing.

Starting in as early as 2013, but with roots that go even further than that, Fillamentum is a brand that actually began working in the automotive industry, before moving into the packaging industry, and then eventually arriving in (and specialising in) 3D printing, where they found their true passion. And as a company that has always placed a high priority on following innovation, they took to 3D printing like a fish to water, and since 2013, have been consistently introducing fresh new innovations to the industry in the form of new types of polymers, refinements to classic polymers, as well as hybrid polymers that blend in materials like wood for distinctively unique effects.

What we really love about Fillamentum and their awesome 3D filaments range, is that they offer true consistency even between hundreds or thousands of batches. In fact, they actually match many of their colours to specifically defined Pantones and RAL colours, which are universal colour standards that artists, designers and many other professionals commonly use for precision colour coordination. This of course is complemented by their consistent quality, with an impressive (and tested) 0.05mm tolerance throughout each spool, as well as consistent results from various colours across multiple batches during our own testing phases.

As a brand that clearly demonstrates its passion for 3D printing through it’s beautiful 3D filaments, we’ve been exceptionally impressed with Fillamentum, and we certainly won’t be too surprised if Fillamentum becomes your new favourite 3D filament for all occasions.
