The MQ-7 Carbon Monoxide Gas Sensor Module is a smart little individual sensor designed to measure the levels and saturation of carbon monoxide in an environment, and utilises variable resistance to detect gas with extreme precision. Capable of measuring concentrations of between 10 to 500 parts per million (ppm), the Sn02 semiconductor film within this sensor becomes more conductive when exposed to higher concentrations of carbon monoxide, outputting an analogue resistance to the ADC pin that Development Platforms like Arduino can then read.

Despite the fact that most gases are invisible to the naked eye, many gases like carbon monoxide can be deadly in high concentrations. This is especially important in small or airtight environments like laboratories, workshops, or in underground rooms where air cannot flow freely, and an undetected build-up of dangerous gases in these types of environments can be extremely dangerous. Fortunately, Gas Sensors like these are designed to rapidly detect high concentrations and act as a warning to protect the inhabitants of the room. The module also offers a few extra features in addition to the actual sensor, such as a sensitivity adjustment screw, that all enhance the functionality and make the sensor easier to work with and connect to.

Although there are many different gases that can be toxic in high concentrations, carbon monoxide is arguably one of the most dangerous, since there are many different machines and engines that produce this gas. In fact, even just sitting in heavy traffic for a few hours with your windows open can cause noticeable harm to your health, which demonstrates just how important these kinds of Environmental Sensors can be.
