While we all know that fresh breathing air is important, and that if we don’t have enough it can cause serious problems in all kinds of ways. However, sometimes the air around us may not seem so unhealthy, but can actually still be bad enough to make us tired, cause us to struggle with concentration, and can even affect memory along with productivity and health. This of course means that it’s perhaps far more important than we always suspected, and that if we focus on keeping the air around us cleaner and healthier, we might actually be able to lead more productive and focused lives, which would make us happier and more efficient Makers both in the short term and the long term. This is why we’ve taken quite a strong interest in Sensor Modules like the CCS811 Air Quality Sensor, which can measure the equivalent-C02 levels as well as Total Volatile Organic Compounds and tell us precisely how healthy the air is to breathe, allowing us to make smarter, healthier choices on the filtration, filtration and flow of the air around us.

This CCS811 Air Quality Sensor is made by DFRobot and are designed to the Fermion series of boards, which is focused more toward experienced Makers, with unpopulated pins and a header that you can use to integrate the sensor into designs and prototypes. It operates on I2C communication, and features a primary and secondary address so it can be used alongside other Environmental Sensors in an array or system. In terms of measuring accuracy, this sensor is accurate at measuring between 400 and 8000 parts per million for e-C02, and an impressive 0 to 1100 parts per billion for TVOCs. This is the perfect measuring range for hobbyist sensors, and this range has been particularly chosen to cater to the common environments that humans would typically live in, where at around 500 we start feeling anxious, at 1000 we get tired, and beyond that it can start causing serious problems. So if you’ve been wanting to get a better understanding of just how healthy the air around you might be, so that you can start to make smarter, healthier moves to lead a healthier and more productive life, this awesome sensor, with a conveniently wide operating voltage to accommodate many different microcontrollers, is the perfect module to get it all started.
