When it comes to adding functionality to a Raspberry Pi project, this multi-communications module is capable of GSM, GPRS, GNSS and Bluetooth Communications, and plugs directly onto the top of a Raspberry Pi. This enables projects to utilise global position, communications between various devices, as well as phone calls, SMS and MMS capabilities and even internet access.

Fortunately, thanks to the simple plug ‘n’ play functionality of this module, it is relatively easy to use even for beginners, and with just a little bit of learning and research you can add a wide range of functionality to almost any Raspberry Pi project. The GSM/GPRS operates on GSM 850, EGSM 900, DCS 1800 as well as PCS 1900 MHz bands, and has a quad-band auto search feature that automatically selects the best band to utilise. The GNSS uses 33 tracking channels and 99 acquisition channels, with a -165dBm tracking sensitivity.

These features make this module the ultimate Communications tool and opens up a massive range of opportunities for making advanced projects, which can track global positioning, communicate with multiple different devices and systems, and even send messages, make phone calls or connect to the internet to keep you updated.

Typical Applications for the GSM/GPRS/GNSS/Bluetooth HAT for Raspberry Pi:

With the GSM/GPRS/GNSS/Bluetooth HAT for Raspberry Pi, you have so many more opportunities for making truly exciting projects that not only keep track of the GPS Positioning of the unit, but are also capable of communicating these details to a wide range of different devices and systems. From basic Bluetooth data transfer to internet connectivity and the ability to send messages or make phone calls via GSM. As such, this HAT can be used for the following, as well as many more, projects:

  • Building a device that keeps track of your location and automatically posts to social media sites when you visit various places, or lets your loved ones know via SMS when you’ve arrived safely at a destination.
  • Creating a system that you can connect to via different devices to post project information to a blog, or share information with college friends or work associates.
  • Making a robot or drone that follows you around and keeps track of your location or activities, possibly even logging that information on a personal server for use later.

While these are relatively simple projects that many intermediate users could find enjoyable, there are also even more advanced projects that you could undertake with this HAT. So consider getting one to experiment with and discover exactly how much functionality this HAT can provide for the projects that you’re busy working on, or even for future projects that you’ve always been eager to try.
