Wireless communications have always been a personal favourite area of expertise for our lead electronics engineer, and this is certainly not a surprise, as it allows various electronics boards, modules and even individual components to communicate with each other over long distances. This is why he has been so excited to get the recent range of LoRa Modules (which stands for Long-Range) from a fantastic supplier known as Pi Supply, with this IoT LoRa Gateway HAT for Raspberry Pi leading the way as the brains-board behind wireless operations at up to 10km range.

The IoT LoRa Gateway HAT is designed to utilise the powerful RAK833 Digital Baseband Chip, so as to act as a “Headquarters” of sort, connecting to all of the IoT LoRa Node pHATs on your network via “The Things Network”. This allows you to install your Gateway at home, at the office, or another centralised location, with each of the Nodes sending vital information back to HQ. With this network, you can create your own localised weather prediction service within your neighbourhood, a crop and soil health monitor for a small to moderate farm, or even your own home automation system with integrated sensors, actuators, interfaces and control methods.

The IoT LoRa GatewaY HAT is built according to the awesome Pi HAT standard, which means it can be plugged directly into the top of any Raspberry Pi Board that offers 40 GPIO pins. This allows the HAT to specialise and focus on what it’s good at, while the Raspberry Pi base helps handle all of the data and power delivery required. This is why Pi HATs like these offer excellent value for money, with the additional benefit being that users can also integrate other HATs onto the board as well, which means your Gateways, nodes and other connected Pi boards could have Sense HATs, Automation HATs, Motor Driver HATs or almost any other HATs included, in order to complement the system you are building in various different ways.

Please Note: When operating at full capacity, the RAK833 module gets VERY hot, and can reach temperatures ranging between 50° and 70°C with the heatsink installed. Please be very aware of this, and take it into consideration regarding any enclosure designs you have, as well as the location you want to install it.

Whilst there are certainly a lot of options to choose from when building wireless Communications projects, the IoT LoRa Gateway HAT for Raspberry Pi differentiates itself from the rest by utilising the specialised LoRa protocol, which is designed to maintain reliable data transmission over very long distances of up to 10km in open-air. It achieves incredible distances like this while maintaining informational clarity by reducing the speed at which the transmissions take place, depending of course on the range that it has to transmit. These features make the LoRa protocol perfect for low-bandwidth usage for projects like sensor arrays and monitoring systems, as these types of systems typically deliver very low amounts of data, with very of these transmissions being extremely time-sensitive – making a low speed high range transmission protocol the perfect choice.
