Building projects with Microcontrollers almost always produces great results, but if you’re like us, then you want to be able to take your projects out into the world to show off to friends, family and, well, everyone you can! Unfortunately, however, it’s not always as simple as sticky-taping a battery to the side of the project, and this is why we get so excited at the prospect of Modules like these 5V Output Li-Polymer Battery HATs.

These handy Battery HATs are designed to be compatible with a wide range of different 5V Microcontroller Units, and offer a way to use a Lithium-Polymer Battery as a makeshift Uninterruptible Power Supply, allowing you to take your projects out into the wild with you, strutting their stuff for all to see, and letting you enjoy your projects both at home and in the real world. We particularly like using these awesome Pi HATs for projects such as e-Textiles and Wearable tech’, (such as the Crazy LED Suit that our lead engineer built many years ago) as it offers a far easier and more affordable solution to portable power than many of the previous solutions from the past.

In addition to just being an awesome and ultra-handy module with USB-A Output, Micro USB Input and USB Type-C Input/Output, the Li-Polymer Battery HAT also utilises the SW6106 Power Management IC, which allows it to negotiate with some devices and modules for fast charging. As such, it supports a wide range of fast-charging protocols, including PD, QC, FCP, PE and SFCP, even going so far as to offer bidirectional fast-charging via the USB Type-C port as well. There are few modules that can offer as much value as the Li-Polymer Battery HAT can, as it is ideal for all kinds of 5V microcontrollers, but also for a good range of other 5V applications too.

Please Note: When replacing or swapping out the battery on this unit, it’s imperative that you first disconnect any devices before doing so, so as to protect the device and module from unexpected surges and electrical damage.

Typical Applications for the Li-Polymer Battery HAT:

If you love building electronics projects, but are always disappointed when you can’t take your projects out into the real world, then this Li-Polymer Battery HAT is an excellent, reliable solution that will let you do just that. It includes a 3000mAh LiPo Battery, which can of course be upgraded to a larger capacity battery if necessary, and even includes a handy function button that lets you turn your project on and off at will. With this in mind, this Pi HAT can be used for more than just powering projects, and you can actually use this HAT as a custom power bank, a portable power unit for 5V devices, or simply as a semi-uninterruptible power supply to keep your Pi or other projects going even when Eskom decides to cut your power.

When it comes to producing unique electronics components and modules, there are very few brands that can provide the quality that Waveshare can. Based in the Futian District in Shenzhen, China, Waveshare are experts in developing electronics to a high standard of quality, which have been thoroughly tested to work seamlessly with corresponding development platforms and systems – such as the E-Ink HATs for Raspberry Pi’s.

What we love most about Waveshare is how they are dedicated to providing quality products, and have moved away from the typical “Made in China” stigma – cheap products with cheap parts and components. Instead, Waveshare understand the value of supplying quality products and building sustainable relationships with international resellers and distributors. They know that consistent quality will result in consistent business, and as such they always ensure strict quality control for each and every product that comes out of the manufacturing plant.

We are always excited to peruse through their vast catalogue of exciting new products to find unique modules, components or even entire development boards that are designed with quality in mind. Because we know that every cent that we spend with Waveshare will be well-spent, with each product that order adding real value to our own catalogue of products.
