With the growing popularity and widespread use of LTE in our modern world, as well as the recent big developments in 4G and 5G technologies, it’s not too surprising that such technologies are making their way into the homes and workshops of Makers, with Hobbyist Modules that compete extremely well both in terms of functionality as well as cost effectiveness. This SIM7070G Cellular IoT HAT for Raspberry Pi is a prime example of how these high-function, low-cost modules that are coming to the Hobbyist Electronics world, and offer loads of cool features all packed onto a tiny, compact module with awesome support and compatibility for other boards and modules.
These SIM7070G Cellular IoT HATs are primarily designed to offer NB-IoT and Cat-M capabilities, but also include GPRS and GNSS capabilities as well for even more value to end users. This caters to both wider bandwidth applications like voice communications and uploads or downloads of up to 1Mbps, but also to narrow bandwidth applications for use cases that don’t need constant streaming data, but instead just need reliable, consistent and extremely low power communications. And now, with both of these cool technologies bundled together into one single expansion module, you can really take your projects and ideas to the next level – with impressive levels of functionality in multiple different areas of communication.
In terms of support and compatibility, the SIM7070G Cellular IoT HAT has been designed specifically to the classic Raspberry Pi HATs design, allowing Makers to simply plug this module into the top of a Pi Board and get started without any soldering or circuit building required. Furthermore, this module also has been cleverly designed with broken out Controller Pins, supporting UART for a wide range of other boards too, including the awesome Arduino Range, but also various STM32 based boards and other development platforms. These features all culminate into an incredible expansion module that is ready to deliver loads of benefits at an impressively low cost, and in using protocols that are already well-regarded within the world of IoT and Cellular Communications, you can rest assured that it will also be quite future-proof, with these already being quite well integrated into 5G and capable of efficiently co-existing with 5G NR in the same spectrum.

When it comes to producing unique electronics components and modules, there are very few brands that can provide the quality that Waveshare can. Based in the Futian District in Shenzhen, China, Waveshare are experts in developing electronics to a high standard of quality, which have been thoroughly tested to work seamlessly with corresponding development platforms and systems – such as the E-Ink HATs for Raspberry Pi’s.
What we love most about Waveshare is how they are dedicated to providing quality products, and have moved away from the typical “Made in China” stigma – cheap products with cheap parts and components. Instead, Waveshare understand the value of supplying quality products and building sustainable relationships with international resellers and distributors. They know that consistent quality will result in consistent business, and as such they always ensure strict quality control for each and every product that comes out of the manufacturing plant.
We are always excited to peruse through their vast catalogue of exciting new products to find unique modules, components or even entire development boards that are designed with quality in mind. Because we know that every cent that we spend with Waveshare will be well-spent, with each product that order adding real value to our own catalogue of products.
