The L293DNE Motor Driver IC is a Quadruple Half-H Driver, and is used to drive motors bidirectionally through the use of clever design with operational amplifiers and the classic Half-H layout that allows for quick direction switching and relatively high levels of efficiency. It is very commonly used in Motor Driver Modules such as the Arduino Motor Driver Shield, and can handle up to 1.2A peak current rates, as well as a continuous 0.6A current, at up to 36V with a separate 5V input-logic supply to reduce chances of noise between inputs.
