As the industry of electronics advances, the world of Hobbyist Electronics is slowly becoming more focused on digital processing, and this is almost to be expected with the impressive number of different microcontrollers and Development Platforms being made available to modern Makers. However, for anyone who loves to build circuits and projects from absolute scratch, analog still dominates the scene, as microcontrollers are typically expensive compared to specialised analog components, and more often than not you don’t actually need to use the full functionality of a microcontroller in order to achieve the desired results you’re looking for.

These 74HC125D Quad Buffer/Line Driver Logic Gates are 3-State Integrated Circuits that are ideal for Makers who like to build analog circuits. It features four individual 3-state outputs that can be turned ON of OFF by the Output Enable pins (nOE), with the logic level then being driven by the Data Input pins (nA) to produce a desired output logic level via the Data Output pins (nY). This allows for more than just HIGH/LOW control, and the Enable Pin can also be used to create an equivalent Open-Circuit state through the use of high-impedance (Z-Hi).

In addition to all of the above great features, we particularly like the 74HC125D IC for its ability to be used as a basic but very effective logic level converter between 3.3V and 5V TTL logic. This is achieved by the unique properties of this IC, with it being able to read logic levels of 0V - 2V for LOW, and 3.15V - 5V for HIGH, which of course means that you can technically drive a 5V Logic High with 3.3V signal (and vice versa), and you can even translate the PWM duty cycles between these two voltage levels too. And of course, this is an ideal solution for SPI buses between various Microcontrollers, Modules and other components within a system – with some of these operating on 3.3V, others operating on 5V, and the 74HC125D IC being the key component that translates these Serial Communications.
