As humans, we are quite fortunate to have extremely advanced brains, but if there’s one area in which our brains can sometimes let us down, it’s with light and the various filtering processes that happen behind the scenes, which we don’t necessarily notice but which do help us focus, concentrate and make better sense of the world around us. Fortunately, even though our brains filter out certain things and don’t let us see the entire reality around us, we have awesome Electronics Sensors that can help us get better understandings of our environments, even if our brains are trying to ignore various inputs, and these Analog Gravity Series Ambient light Sensor Modules are excellent examples of that. These sensors are designed to take an objective approach and measure extremely subtle levels of ambient light change in environments, and while this may not help us see better in the dark or identify things in dimly lit areas with our human eyes, it can certainly help us improve and advance our projects with more capabilities and functionalities.

These ambient light sensor modules are built to the Gravity Series standard, which makes interfacing extremely easy with almost any 3.3V to 5V microcontroller on the market, and they feature a low cost but high reliability PT550 sensor with a cleverly designed cap that adds precision but keeps the costs low. They offer a simple use style, only requiring a VCC, GND and Signal-Output pin to operate, and provide a precise analog output that changes as the ambient light in the environment changes. This is perfect for building projects that may need to react to changes in lighting, such as automated outdoor lighting, protection features on machine enclosures, specialised lab or workshop equipment, or even for basic alarm systems, and these Modules can even be integrated into heavier machinery when used alongside Relay Modules and similar types of basic electronics goodies.

Of course, in addition to the above features, the light sensor and simplified design for this module also makes it an extremely cost-effective ambient light sensor even when compared to similar models, and that makes it the ideal choice for Hobbyist Electronics and basic applications that don’t require any special standards or protocols. Furthermore, with a nice wide operating voltage range, this module can also be used with all kinds of microcontrollers and systems from Arduino to NVIDIA Jetson Nano, as well as everything in between. So if you’ve been looking for an ambient light sensor to experiment with, or are just looking for a great cost-efficient way to add ambient light sensing into your project, you can’t go wrong this easy to use Analog Ambient Light Sensor Module from DFRobot.

As self-proclaimed “Robo-holics”, DFRobot is a company comprised of over 100 staff members, of which 30% are engineers who love to build robots. It was started in 2008 with the goal of embracing and promoting open-source hardware, with a core focus on Arduino, Raspberry Pi and their very own LattePanda development boards. Since then, DFRobot have manufactured over 1300 unique modules, sensors and components that all work together and complement each other, allowing users like us to enjoy a full spectrum of cutting edge robotics and electronics without having to pay premium prices.

With the primary goal of developing and manufacturing great quality products, while making them accessible to as many people as possible, DFRobot are rapidly becoming one of the most common-place brands in the world of open-source robotics and electronics. With more than 1300 products developed in-house, and an impressive range of different categories and specialisations, there are few brands in the world who can compete in terms of quality, accessibility and genuine innovation.
