This LDR 5mm GL5516 Light Dependent Resistor is a photoresistor with a semiconductor material inside, which reacts to light and essentially changes the resistance of the circuit. This is most often used for applications in which circuits need to be operational according to the amount of light in the surrounding area – such as streetlamps and automatic night-lights.

It works by utilizing the semiconductor material, which has reduced resistance when exposed to high intensities of light. This makes the resistor an automatic switch, offering low resistance when light is apparent, and high resistance in the dark.

Please Note: These units are priced individually, but have a minimum order quantity of 5. This is to help professionals and contractors in their pricing structures, while avoiding unnecessary shipping costs, so as to ensure the best possible price for each and every customer.

Typical Applications for these 5mm GL5516 Light Dependant Resistors:

These types of resistors are most often used for automatic lighting and other operations that are dependent on the time of day or amount of light available. As such, typical projects involving these resistors include:

  • Lights that turn on at night, or when alternate light is unavailable.
  • Light sensors on an alarm for light-sensitive rooms like photo-development darkrooms.
  • Upgrading a pool pump from timer to daylight-based operations.

These are just a few of the basic ways in which LDRs can be utilized, and there are certainly other ways you could choose to use them as well. So consider getting a few of these to start automating some of the simpler areas of your home or office.
