When 3D Printing a beautiful masterpiece with complex details and extremely challenging parts like overhangs and bridges, there are few things worse than being hit by a power outage just as the print is nearing its end. And with loadshedding being quite a prevalent part of our lives, as well as other potential power problems that could strike out of nowhere, this is a serious concern for someone who loves to Make, but hates to waste filament. This is what gives the BigTreeTech Mini UPS V2.0 - 12V Power Out Detector such a solid value in our country, despite being relatively cheap to buy, as it can help protect your masterpieces from complete disaster in case of a power outage, and ensures that your 3D Printer will have just enough time to save the current progress into memory and move the hotend out of the way to prevent burn spots.

This handy little module is relatively easy to install, and connects to both the 12V Power Supply of your 3D Printer, as well as its Controller Board. Then, once it detects that the power has been cut from the power supply, it sends a signal to the motherboard, while also providing a tiny amount of stored power from its capacitors, after which the motherboard just enough stops printing, saves the progress, and moves the hotend slightly upward. Then, once the power has come back on, you can utilise the print resume functionality on your 3D Printer to find that stored progress data, get back into the right position, and then carry on printing like nothing had ever happened.

Compared to many other Power-Out Detectors, such as the MKS 220DET Power Out Detector, this module is clever in the way that it also features some onboard capacitors, which is how it manages to lift the print head even after the power has been cut. This is fantastic, as it helps to prevent the print head from burning the print on the spot where it’s left standing, and while the print-resume may not be absolutely perfect, and could leave a small line around the print on that layer, such a minor artefact is quite easy to fix, and is certainly much better than a ruined print that ends up going into the recycling bin. So if you’re tired of spoiled prints from power cuts, whether it’s the loss of an entire print or just a burnt black spot on a beautiful model, the BigTreeTech 12V Mini UPS V2.0 is an awesome upgrade that can save you from a lot of headaches, heartache and wasted filament.
