When dealing with electricity and Electronics, it is always surprising to newcomers just how quickly the electrical signalling occurs within a circuit, and how we can barely even fathom the rates at which small components can turn on and off, or perform some other kind of seemingly complex task. Fortunately though, we don’t necessarily have to be able to imagine the extreme speeds at which some components act, and instead we can simply rely on what we know as frequency when working out speeds and rates of processing within a system, and this is where incredibly fast switching components like MOSFETs & Transistors really strut their stuff.
These 2N7000G N-Channel MOSFETs are relatively common in the world of small-scale electronics, and are Enhancement-type MOSFETS that offer a relatively beefy 200mA @ 60V throughput capability. They are designed to be able to turn on and off at a mind-blowing speed of only 10 nanoseconds per action, and despite being able to control reasonably large 60V circuits at a frequency as high as 100MHz, these MOSFETs can be controlled with signals as low as 0.8V to 3V DC. This makes them an excellent choice to use alongside microcontrollers like Arduino Boards, allowing you to keep your control circuit and user isolated from the high voltages being controlled, while also being able to simply switch circuits on or off, but also switch them on and off at extremely fast speeds so as to simulate a duty cycle or waveform.
This kind of functionality is very similar to Bipolar Junction Transistors, although whilst standard transistors use current as the method of controlling the switching, MOSFETs utilise voltages instead. This is what makes MOSFETs arguably easier to use than transistors, although each of the many different Electronics Components that we have nowadays have their own pros, cons, as well as particular fields of effectiveness.
