Within electronics, connecting two different systems together is seldom easy, especially if these systems operate at different voltages. Fortunately, the brilliant people over at Particle have already thought of this, and provided a great solution known as the Particle Shield Shield for Photon. This shield allows your Photon to communicate with Arduino Boards – even though they operate at different voltages – without any risk of one board burning out the other.
This shield basically translates the voltage between 5V and 3.3V systems, so that they can work together to perform even more than they could have individually. It is designed with an Arduino-compatible footprint, while catering to the electronics needs of a Photon board, making it both an effective and an easy-to-use translator for the boards.
Just remember that the analogue pins are rated to a maximum voltage of 3.3V, so be sure not to overload these pins, and be sure to utilise other pins if you are connecting boards that operate at voltages higher than 3.3V.

Particle is a comprehensive Internet of Things platform that is scalable, easy to use and secure, which was started as a Kickstarter campaign in as early as 2013. It was founded with the intent to make IoT easy and accessible for everyone, and by many people’s standards they have successfully achieved that, with over 70,000 engineers in over 170 countries utilising the Particle platform – including several Fortune 500 companies.
One of the recent utilisations of the potential of Particle tools is how it was implemented to connect a vital water-valve to the internet, allowing it to monitor the weather, identify the incoming Hurricane Irma, and prepare to move the water to where it needed to go – before the rain had even begun to fall in the area. This is just one of the many amazing examples of how Particle IoT can benefit more than just businesses or developers, as well as how Particle’s vision of IoT being integrated into almost everything – both online and offline – is quickly becoming a reality.
