While we have always dreamed of having multiple 3D Printers in various schools and learning institutes throughout South Africa, the truth is that 3D Printers can be complicated machines, and sometimes even the smallest problem can lead to big mistakes if users don’t fully understand what they are doing. Fortunately, this is all about to change with the FlashForge Adventurer 3 3D Printer, which is a beautiful little fabricator from the reputable brand FlashForge, that is designed to be as beginner-friendly as possible – making it ideal for classrooms and learning environments.

The FlashForge Adventurer 3 3D Printer, despite looking like a relatively basic little machine, is surprisingly complex and powerful, and features many of the very best features of popular 3D Printers from brands like Creality and Wanhao. However, this machine also goes above and beyond the typical set of bells and whistles, with a range of very modernised functions and features that are focused on both print quality and a Truly Awesome user experience – even offering 8GB of onboard/internal memory to save you the trouble of having to reload previously-used files in case you want to make another copy of a recent print!

These features, in addition to the fact that the it can print in PLA, ABS and even PETG 3D Filaments, makes the Adventurer 3 one of the best 3D Printers that we’ve had the pleasure of stocking.

The Exciting Features of the FlashForge Adventurer 3 3D Printer:

When designing the Adventurer 3 3D Printer, it’s easy to see that FlashForge knew precisely how to focus the features, user experience and even price point in order to perfectly accommodate learning environments. However, don’t be fooled by the somewhat playful aesthetics and rudimentary user interface, as the Adventurer 3 also offers an excellent set of advanced features that even professionals would be able to appreciate and benefit from.

So, with the educational and professional factors of this machine in mind, let’s take a closer look at what kinds of functions and exciting features that you can look forward to when you equip your home, office, classroom or lecture hall with the small, versatile and powerful Adventurer 3 3D Printer:

  • Full Enclosure – Although this is typically reserved for high-end (High-Price) 3D Printers, the Adventurer 3 features a well-designed but cost-efficient enclosure made from aluminium and high-grade ABS. This enables the Adventurer 3 to print in both PLA and ABS, while offering the added benefit of more consistent print quality with less external forces affecting each print.

  • Polar Cloud Enabled – One of the most amazing features of the Adventurer 3 is that FlashForge have teamed up with Polar3D Cloud Online 3D Printer Management portal, allowing owners of Adventurer 3 and Guider IIs 3D Printers to design, slice and share files, queue and manage projects, and even preheat or adjust temperatures of the nozzle and heated bed.

  • Online HD Camera – As a way to complement the online functionality of the Adventurer 3, FlashForge have placed an HD camera within the enclosure so that users can watch their prints go without having to even be in the same room as the printer. And by using the Polar Cloud or Flash Cloud portals, you can watch your prints build from anywhere with an internet connection!

  • Diverse Connectivity – As Makers who like to give our projects as many communication capabilities as possible (whenever possible), we love the sheer diversity of communications methods that the Adventurer 3 offers. Whereas most 3D Printers simply offer USB-B connections and SD card input, the Adventurer 3 follows suite to the FlashForge Guider IIs by offering USB Cable, USB Drive, WiFi or Ethernet – ensuring that you will have more than just a few options when choosing how you want to connect with the Adventurer 3.

  • Unique “Level-Free” Bed – While it may be difficult to believe (and to tell you the truth we didn’t believe it at first either) the FlashForge Adventurer 3 features a unique “Level-Free Bed System”, with no height-adjustment nuts below the bed and no way to alter the angle of the bed either. However, because of the highly rigid design of the frame and bed carriage, in conjunction with the “Shape Memory Material” used for the bed, this unique design actually works!

  • FlashPrint Slicing SoftwareWhile most 3D Printers rely on the tried and trusted (and certainly quite powerful) Cura slicing software, FlashForge have gone above and beyond by creating their very own slicing software called FlashPrint. This software is built to be as user friendly as possible for beginners, while still offering excellent advanced features that professionals will appreciate. It includes editable support structures, automatic support generation, online connectivity to connect directly to your 3D Printer, and even offers design-sharing and collaboration as well as helpful tutorials, guides and more!

These amazing features certainly distinguish the FlashForge Adventurer 3 from a large majority of other models on the market, but now let’s take a look at some of the more standardised technical specifications, to see how this beautiful machine compares to the other 3D Printers that we stock:

Our Verdict on the Learning-Friendly FlashForge Adventurer 3 3D Printer:

With so many amazing features and a strong focus on helping new users rapidly learn and develop 3D Printing skills, we are thrilled with the sheer value-for-money that the FlashForge Adventurer 3 3D Printer offers.

And while some may argue that it’s a bit complex for beginners to handle, we put this printer to the ultimate test by making our copywriter, who has never 3D Printed anything in his entire life, learn and use the printer without any assistance from our engineers, chemists or printing masters here at DIYElectronics. Surprisingly enough, within just three hours, our copywriter had not only printed a fish and a calibration stress test, but he had also set up accounts on Polar Cloud and Flash Cloud, downloaded and utilised FlashPrint slicing software, and even shared a design online for others to enjoy as well!

This is the ultimate proof that even absolute newbies can enjoy the full feature-set of the FlashForge Adventurer 3 3D Printer, and with just a little bit of patience, the willingness to learn, and perseverance to try different settings and printing profiles before simply giving up, we are confident that anyone could learn to not only print, but thrive in 3D Design and Fabrication.

Printing Your Own Spool Holder – The Open-Source Way!

As a final note about the FlashForge Adventurer 3, while it has been designed to support the NFC chips built into specific filament brands’ spools to identify filament type, colour and remaining quantity, this machine is not in any way confined to those specific brands – And you can use any brand of filament you want on the Adventurer 3.

However, some of the larger spools may not fit on the small spool holder that the machine is equipped with. Fortunately though, there are multiple different spool holder attachments and adapters that you can find on Thingiverse, which you can easily print with the FlashForge Filament that is included with the printer. Then, after the attachment is printed, you can simply slide it onto the end of the existing spool holder, and fit any sized spool you want, from 300g to 2kg!

So far, we have found the most basic spool holder be the best, and the model for that can be downloaded for free from this FlashForge Spool Holder page on Thingiverse. Then, simply use the Polar3D Online Cloud Software to print the file on Medium Quality, with 25% Infill, a Skirt Outline and No Supports – after which it should fit quite snugly over the original spool holder.

Additionally, there are quite a few printable upgrades and accessories available on Thingiverse for this particular model of printer, so be sure to do a search for “Adventurer 3” onsite to find them, and discover some of the cool, functional prints that other Adventurer 3 users are creating and sharing.

Additional Resources:

Finally, the FlashForge Adventurer 3 is designed to fit small spools of filament, which is ideal for classroom environments, but doesn't quite suit a veteran Maker. As such, it's a good idea to print one of the following spool holder adapters, so as to accommodate larger spools from eSUN, CCTREENinjaTek and other highly respected brands:

  • This Spool Holder Extender is the one we've chosen to use here in the office, and we've enjoyed countless hours of printing without any problems.
  • This Second Spool Holder Adapter also features a filament guide, although we haven't yet tested the effectiveness of this unit.
  • Finally, this Spool Holder Door is a unique type of "Adapter", as it lets you use a standard desktop spool holder while covering up the electronics and looking pretty darn good while doing it!

FlashForge consists of a team of dedicated and passionate engineers who saw that there was a major gap in the market for high-end 3D Printers – but without high-end price tags attached. And so their journey began, which has over the years resulted in some of the world’s best hobbyist and professional grade 3D Printers, with some of their most impressive models actually placing in the Top 10 for many different 3D Printing News and Reviews sites.

The wide range of 3D Printers that FlashForge offers includes the popular models like the Dreamer, Creator Pro, Guider Series and Adventurer Series, as well as their lesser-known models like the Hunter, the Inventor Series, and a few models that didn’t quite make it to production. This expansive selection is not only amazing because of the sheer choice of different features and functionality that it gives to end-users, but also because it has helped them improve their skills, refine their designs, and nail down their supply chains to ensure premium quality parts at excellent rates – a benefit that they pass down to customers who consequently also get to enjoy reduced pricing on top quality components.

With over 13 sought-after models under their name and continuous development each and every year, FlashForge is a brand that we trust to deliver product and service excellent – but without the high price tag that such excellence typically demands.
