As many of us 3D enthusiasts will know, the start of 2019 has certainly been exciting, with newly upgraded Pro editions of some of the world’s top hobbyist 3D Printers bringing a host of exciting new features, as well as some much-needed refinements focused on print quality and user experience. The newly updated Wanhao Duplicator 9 MK2 3D Printer is one such upgraded model, and this new D9 MK2 has seen a range of very appreciated improvements over the original Wanhao Duplicator 9 Mark 1 – which we’re excited to tell you about!

So what are the Exciting New Features of the Wanhao D9/300 MK2?

After a few issues with the original Duplicator 9 models, it’s good to see that Wanhao has picked up the slack and given their top model some much-needed love to keep it competitive with other models like the Creality CR-10S Pro. However, despite being relatively quiet for a few months leading up to the D9 MK2 launch, we are happy to say that this was precisely what Wanhao needed to do – and this is quite evident after seeing the great results.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the top features that have given the new Wanhao D9 MK2 the competitive edge that it needed, with some of our favourites listed first, and some of the lesser important (but still appreciated) features following:

  • A New Double-Sided Heated Bed – While we know that we should be more excited about the other features in this list, this particular feature is rather ingenious, and may just be a first in 3D Printing history. Featuring latticed etchings on one side and a permanently-adhered PVC Mat on the other, the glass bed that comes with the Duplicator 9 MK2 is double-sided, and can be flipped over to swap between the latticed glass and the PVC Mat as you see fit. This enables you to test both different bed styles and find the perfect one for whatever 3D Filaments you are using, with each side offering distinct benefits – doubling the effective value of the bed without requiring any extra parts or tools!
  • A Stock All Metal Hotend Assembly – While some of you may remember that the original Duplicator 9 came with a PTFE-lined hotend assembly, this new MK2 edition does away with that redundancy, and is equipped with a stock all-metal hotend assembly capable of reaching temperatures up to 300°C. This ensures that you will never have to replace your hotend assembly just to achieve the temperatures you need for Exotic Filaments, and doesn’t leave you with a  PTFE-lined hotend that you may never actually use.
  • Reinforced “RIB” Stabiliser Bars – If you like to keep up with 3D Printing news and updates, then you may already know that the original Duplicator 9 struggles with accuracy on large prints, and would start giving subtle problems at the higher ranges of the Z-axis. These reinforced “RIB” bars connect the base of the chassis to the crossbar at the top, which leads to far better structural stability. This of course has eliminated the problems near the maximum heights, while also slightly enhancing overall print quality, making it a welcome upgrade that owners of the original D9 may certainly appreciate.
  • An Intelligent Cable Protection System – Over the past few years, many of the top manufacturers of hobbyist 3D printers have tried a variety of different ways to neaten up the cabling on their machines by hiding cables in the aluminium extrusion channels, bundling them into single cable sets with predefined paths, as well as a few other inventive (and sometimes disastrous) ways. However, the new system that Wanhao have introduced absolutely nails it, and utilises a mix of many different cable neatening techniques, in conjunction with a zipcord-like string that attaches between the extruder cable and the filament spool holder on the top crossbar, to keep the cables neatly tucked out of the way of the extruder assembly in one of the most unobstructed ways possible!
  • Dynamic Z-Offset Mid-Print Adjustments – While we all love automatic bed levelling and the sheer convenience it offers, it too has its downfalls – or at least it did until now. The Duplicator 9 MK2 features automatic 4-point bed levelling with an authentic BLTouch Smart 2.0 Sensor, but also complements this with a new dynamic Z-offset adjustment that can be performed during the printing process. This allows you to automatically level your bed, and then perform “on-the-fly” adjustments to get your Z-height as close to perfect as possible, without having to stop the print or install any specialised programs or applications to do so.
  • An Authentic BLTouch Smart 2.0 Sensor – When it comes to Automatic Bed Levelling Sensors, there is a good reason why BLTouch sensors are some of the most popular sensors available to 3D Makers. And instead of relying on inductive sensors that struggle with non-ferrite materials, or capacitive sensors that sometimes have less-than-ideal accuracy, BLTouch sensors are touch-probes that can identify precision distances on any hard materials, making it the only genuinely valuable choice considering the fact that many 3D Makers like to switch between bed materials and Adhesive Aids depending on what filament they’re using, and even what models they’re printing.

Of course, in addition to these features, the D9 MK2 has also been improved in a variety of ways in terms of the structural integrity and user convenience, including predefined assembly points for the gantry, clearly marked cables and connectors, as well as permanent Gantry-levelling lines to help you get your Z-axis perfectly horizontal without requiring any extra tools (or Coke cans). So now let's explore some of the actual "Tech' Spec's" that help this beautiful machine achieve the impressive print quality that it offers.

Our Verdict on the Wanhao Duplicator 9/300 MK2:

While many of us were eagerly hoping to see Wanhao introduce a Duplicator 11 or similar type of new 3D Printer model this year, we’re certainly not disappointed with what we are now defining as the “Pro” Version of the original Duplicator 9 – aptly named the Duplicator 9 MK2. This updated and upgraded model brings a whole host of very cool new features that offer both major and minor improvements, with a strong consideration toward the plethora of posts, reviews and other user feedback over 2018.

This has resulted in one of the best hobbyist-grade Direct Drive 3D Printers on the market, with incredible rigidity and stability, exceptional printing performance, and a solid collection of ingenious features that are new to the industry, including a double-sided heated bed, repositionable part cooling fan, mid-print dynamic Z-offset adjustment capabilities, and even a clever cable management accessory to keep cables neat and out of harms way, regardless of where the extruder and hotend are positioned!

With all of these fantastic features that Wanhao have brought to the table, we are confident in stating that Wanhao are still maintaining a competitive edge despite being in the midst of an increasingly-saturating market. And while some of the weaker brands are slowly falling out of favour (and some disappearing from the scene altogether), top brands like Wanhao and Creality 3D continue to lead the way forward – with other brands often cloning their tech’ just so that they can keep up.

The following is a great video showing the unboxing and assembly of the Wanhao D9 MK2, and while it is reasonably long, it also contains a wealth of insights and some juicy bits of info' that we didn't have space to talk about in this description. So be sure to check it out and get your mouth watering at the many fancy new features that you can look forward to with the Wanhao Duplicator 9 Mark 2:

Wanhao have been supplying 3D Printers internationally since as early as 2012, and have rapidly garnered a world-renowned reputation for quality machines, parts and components. After originally banding together as a group of friends and purchasing a Makerbot Thing-O-Matic, they created their own “Duplicator 1” 3D Printer, which was essentially a replica of the Thing-O-Matic, with slight modifications and alterations to make it better suit typical users.

Wanhao’s strengths have always stemmed from the fact that they are both 3D Makers and 3D Printer Manufacturers, which allows them to understand the needs of the end user when developing new models or upgrades. It is the same reason why they always make sure to stock spares of all of the different parts and components, because they believe that you should never have to buy an entirely new printer if one part breaks, and should instead be able to simply replace whichever part is broken.

There are few 3D Printing manufacturers with as much experience and reputation as Wanhao, which is why we have chosen them as one of our top suppliers here at DIYElectronics. Not only do they continue to bring out exciting new models and upgrades for existing models, but they also align with our own company culture and values by proactively supplying all of the spare parts that customers might need – so that you, as an end user, never have to source spares or alternatives if you have problems with faulty or broken parts throughout the lifespan of your 3D Printer.
