The Inductive Sensor Probe LJ12A3-4-Z/BX is a fantastic little gadget that is capable of detecting metal without contact, and is often used in 3D printers to read or adjust the level of the Print Bed. It is the same sensor that we use in our own i3 Auto Bed Levelling Kit, but can also be used on most other 3D Printers including the RAMPS 1.4-based machines. This sensor helps identify any warping or sagging of a print bed and provides the necessary data for the firmware to readjust the Z endstop to accommodate for these subtle differences in height.

The benefits that this sensor provides includes better first-layer adhesion on large or simultaneous prints, greater accuracy for the firmware to print ultra-thin layers, as well as less hassle as you don’t need to manually readjust your Z endstop as the bed subtly warps over time. Just remember, however, that because this is an induction sensor, it will only work with metal print beds. The installation may also require some firmware modifications, which can be found on the RepRap Wiki, although this is relatively simple for any veteran Maker or 3D printer enthusiast. This Wiring Guide, however, may also help clear any confusion.

For novices or anybody looking for a simpler solution, we also stock our Auto Bed Levelling Kit, which include an assembled circuit board and a downloadable guide for installation.

Typical Applications for the LJ12A3-4-Z/BX Inductive Sensor Probe:

While the Inductive Sensor Probe LJ12A3-4-Z/BX is only capable of detecting metal due the nature of the sensor, it can in fact detect metal through glass. So don’t worry if you have a glass pane on top of your metal print bed, as this sensor will still work. And if you have any troubles with installation, there are a variety of articles on sites like Thingiverse and Instructables that should help you understand precisely how to setup and install this great little gadget.
