Stepper Motors are ingenious Electromechanical devices that are quite distinct from standard DC Motors and servo motors, as they specialise in rotational torque, holding torque and linear motion along guiderails or defined paths. This is due to the incredibly high level of precision in rotation and power, resulting in consistent accuracy that you can not only rely on, but even use as tools of measurement if necessary due to the high precision, specific step angles, and predefined steps per full revolution.

This NEMA 17 stepper motor is a relatively universal model, capable of reasonably high torque and decent speeds at a nice price. These features make it ideal for applications like 3D Printing, in which you need sufficient power, but very seldom need bursts of higher torque or speed. As such, they can be used just as easily in 3D Printers as they can be used for simple tools for linear motion for cameras, sensors and other modules. Additionally the good holding torque of 45N.cm means it won’t slip or skip steps under the weight of the gantry or wobble from moving build plates and other Mechanical Components, and will be more than capable of maintaining a high level of accuracy throughout its lifespan.
