Measuring temperatures in the past has always been a tricky task, as temperatures are typically measured via direct contact and the thermal equilibrium between two different points or materials. This presented a variety of problems, with the first and arguably most tricky being that the Temperature Sensor probes would need to be able to withstand the same temperatures that they are measuring.

However, modern sensors like this I2C Non-Contact Temperature Sensor have made the task of identifying temperatures far easier than ever before, as you can now detect temperatures at a distance by utilising IR light and changes in wavelengths being bounced off of objects. This solves the problem of the probes needing to withstand extreme temperatures, but also allows you to monitor and control the temperatures of systems – like moving engine parts – without having to develop complex or highly durable connections or thermal transfer techniques.

This module is Arduino compatible and works with a wide range of other microcontrollers like ESP8266 based boards, and includes the necessary cable to make it as easy as possible. With a great wiki page, pre-compiled Arduino libraries, insights on how to calibrate the system, as well as a plethora of knowledge out there on the internet, there are few other hobbyist temperature sensors that offer this much value and ease-of-use.

Typical Applications for I2C Non-Contact Temperature Sensor:

The I2C Non-Contact Temperature Sensor by DFRobot offers the ultimate in temperature sensing speed, accuracy and even ease-of-use, and opens up exciting new opportunities for hobbyists everywhere. With this little Electronics Module, you can build your own temperature sensing “gun”, integrated monitoring and control system for your kitchen appliances, or even design a custom fan that helps you maintain your ideal comfortable temperature during the Summer months. Just remember that you will have to do some light Trigonometry in order to find the optimal sensing distance, although this shouldn’t be a problem as long as you are equipped with a scientific calculator, smart phone or the internet.
