Whether you love getting involved in electronics, mechanics, Robotics or even cooking, temperature is always an important factor to keep track of, as temperatures that are too high or even too low can cause problems in various different ways. This is why, even though we could certainly make most Modules and machines smaller and more compact, sometimes they need the extra size and surface area just so that they don’t overheat. This is why we are always eager to get Temperature Sensors of various kinds for all sorts of different applications, so that you, as a Maker, never have to be caught by surprise when the temperature of a chip, module, system or entire machine rises beyond the safe point, but instead, we can utilise handy sensors like the DS18B20 Waterproof Temperature Sensor for Arduino to monitor temperatures with high precision, and then react to that rise in temperature by turning on a fan, throttling power, or otherwise applying some kind of temperature control.

With this sensor being digital, it offers a good number of clever benefits that analog Sensors would struggle to achieve. The first of these is the fact that it won’t suffer as badly from signal degradation to the digital logic rather than pure analog signal, and this allows for more versatility in the layout and form of various projects. Secondly, each and every chip used for these sensors have been hardcoded with a distinct ID, and in conjunction with the simple 3-wire interface, allows you to stack multiple sensors along a single digital line, with each of the sensors identifying themselves by their ID and providing their own distinct readings that are differentiable from other sensors on the same line. These, while seeming rather simple from a glance, actually allow these sensors to be used in advanced ways, with the waterproofing ensuring that they can be used for almost any application that needs temperature sensing below 125°C and above -55°C.

Whether you’re taking advantage of the waterproofed style for immersed projects like aquarium heating, liquid processing or even cooking, or whether you’re just excited to get yourself a great quality yet low cost temperature sensor to use in other projects, the DFRobot DS18B20 Waterproof Temperature Sensor is always a great choice.

Please Note: This sensor sometimes comes with Red/Black/Yellow wires and sometimes comes with Red/Yellow/Green wires. Rest assured, this is only cosmetic, and doesn’t affect the behaviour of the sensor at all, but please do look at the wiring colours in the table below to ensure that you match the right colours to the right ports/pins.
