Our Story

Similar to all enthusiastic Makers with a shiny new toy, DIYElectronics began as one guy sat on the floor of his student apartment to build the very first Prusa i3 Printer kits. Robert Mawbery (CTO) founded DIYElectronics in 2013 while he was still an engineering student at UCT. There, surrounded by midnight snacks, one of the best 3D Printer kits on the market was developed. The Prusa i3 has entered the lives of over 3000 South Africans and sparked an innovative SA Maker Community across the country. From 2013 to the present, DIYElectronics has upheld our passion as Makers with the goal of making innovative technology easily accessible to hobbyists, students, inventors and entrepreneurs in South Africa. What began as one Electronics Wizard supplying his college friends has turned into a successful startup company that is the leading supplier of 3D Filament and 3D Printers in South Africa, with over 20 staff members, multiple warehouses and offices, thousands of website products and over 40 manufacturers.

Company Culture

Company culture is a big part of DIYElectronics. We believe that a positive work environment drives productivity. This is why at DIYElectronics, we dropped the formal attire for casual, encourage collaboration whether within or between departments, and emphasize the importance of developing new skills such as 3D Printing and electronics. Rather than getting stuck in the same position, we encourage employees to work hard, gain experience, and use the new skills they learn to benefit them both in and out the office.

Community

The truth is the heart of DIYElectronics overflows from these walls, splashing into the Maker community with a box of gizmos and popcorn in hand. We are not only an online store but also foster a fun and helpful community on Discord, online Forums and more. The South African Makerhood is characterized by creative ingenuity and an adventurous spirit. We love this opportunity to innovate together in all things Electronics and the 3D Printing world. Often the ever-curious ones ourselves, we welcome everyone to our DIYE Community Platforms where you can share your projects, grow your skills together and, most importantly, make cool things!
