Each one offers unique, and often impressive, functionality like data logging, WiFi comm’s, or even as a means to prototype custom expansion modules. 

 And because of the open-source nature of these modular Arduino expansion boards, some are made by the Arduino company themselves, while others are simply made by individuals or communities who want to add value to the Arduino project. This means that there are Shields for almost anything you can imagine, and if there isn’t a Shield for what you need, you can build your own unique Shield to cater to your projects’ needs.
