Living in South Africa is certainly full of unique challenges, and unfortunately it’s not uncommon to suddenly experience a power loss, whether from loadshedding or simply a fault at a nearby station. In fact, even without these common power outage hassles, simple power trips can often happen when you least expect them, and in the world of 3D Printing, a simple power cut, even just for a few minutes, can easily spell disaster for a beautiful model – and this can be heartbreaking if the masterpiece was about to be completed. Fortunately, we as Makers have access to clever tools and modules like the BigTreeTech Mini UPS V1.0 - 24V Power Out Detector, which is designed specifically to help prevent disaster in case of power loss, and helps to ensure that you don’t have to waste any 3D Filament from failed prints, but can instead safely continue your print from it you left off as soon as the power comes back online.

This awesome module, known in short as the BTT 24V Mini UPS, is designed to a similar specification as other power outage detectors like the MKS 220DET Power Out Detector, but features some onboard capacitors so as to provide a tiny amount of extra power to the 3D Printer, so that it can not only save the progress of the print, but can also safely move the print head out of the way, so as to prevent that horrible black burn spot that would typically happen if the print head was left in place. This means that, at worst, power outs will simply result in a very small visual line artefact on the layer at which it was stopped, but will certainly not ruin the print with a burn spot, nor will it corrupt the progress data as the motherboard loses power.

If you love 3D Making and absolutely hate the way prints can essentially be destroyed by a simple power cut or breaker trip, then this simple module is an extremely valuable tool to help you avoid heartache, headaches and wasted filament as you enjoy Making all of the awesome models, decorations, accessories and tools on your 3D Printers.

Please Note: The BigTreeTech Mini UPS V1.0 - 24V Power Out Detector is specifically designed for 24V 3D Printers, so be sure to double check your PSU power rating to ensure that you are getting the correct version. Alternatively, if you have a 12V 3D Printer, we also stock the BigTreeTech Mini UPS V2.0 - 12V Power Out Detector, which is similar in design but is made to accommodate 12V Power Supplies instead.

When dealing with any power-related modules, it’s firstly important to remember to disconnect all incoming power before doing anything, and of course use all of the necessary safety precautions to prevent dangerous shocks. With this in mind, we've included some handy resources in the images above, showing the connection diagram, as well as a physical connection demonstration showing what's required to get the full power outage detection functionality of the BTT Mini UPS V1.0.

BigTreeTech Mini UPS V1.0 - 24V Power Out Detector

BigTreeTech Mini UPS V1.0 - 24V Power Out Detector

As one of the rising stars in the world of 3D Printer Component Research and Development, BigTreeTech have certainly hit the ground running, entering the market in 2015 and spending their early stages primarily learning, researching, testing and developing, before producing some truly impressive results. From simple but effective upgrades to standard parts, all the way through to completely custom parts that no other brand offered at the time, BigTreeTech now have an incredibly diverse range, with almost no area of 3D Printing being left out.

Some of BigTreeTech’s most notable additions to the world of 3D Printing include the SKR Motherboard Range for numerous different 3D Printer models, the awesome TFT Touch Display Range with fancy features like dual-mode operation, as well as their very impressive Stepper Driver Range that cater to all tastes and preferences under the sun. And of course, to top it all off, BigTreeTech also have a sister company named BIQU, and we must admit that they have been producing some pretty impressive (and low price) 3D Printers, with the BIQU B1 possibly becoming a new rival to the Ender 3.

Of course, it’s easy to see that BigTreeTech are modern masters of 3D Printing R&D, and while we do still have a lot of different parts that we want to test out from them, so far we’ve been extremely happy with what they’re capable of producing – all while fitting into same kind of hobbyist budget that they used to operate on as Makers and Tinkerers themselves.
