DS3231 is a high-precision I2C real-time clock (RTC), with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) and crystal. The device incorporates a battery input, maintains accurate timekeeping when main power is disconnected. Integrated oscillator improves long-term accuracy of the device and reduces the number of components production lines.

RTC maintains seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. Less than 31 days of the month, the end date will be automatically adjusted, including corrections for leap year. Clock format can be working 24 hours or 12-hour format with / AM / PM indication. Provides two calendar and alarm clock can be set to output a square wave can be set. Address and data are transferred serially through an I2C bidirectional bus.
A precision temperature-compensated voltage reference and comparator circuit monitors the status of VCC to detect power failures, provide a reset output, and automatically switches to the backup supply when necessary. In addition, / RST pin is monitored as produce μP reset manually.
In addition to high timing accuracy beyond, DS3231 also has some other features that extend the functionality of the system host and additional options. The device integrates a very precise digital temperature sensors via I2C * Interface can be accessed (as the same time). This temperature sensor accuracy is ± 3 ° C. Power switching control circuit can be realized on-chip automatic power to detect and manage the main and standby power (ie low battery) between. If the main power failure, the device can continue to provide accurate timing and temperature performance is not affected. When the main power re-power or voltage value returns to within the permissible range, the on-chip reset function can be used to restart the system microprocessor.

LIR2302

As Jacques Mentioned, when powered with at 5.5V it tries to charge the battery at 4.7V which is even to much for an LIR2302 , and will even damage the battery, and when powering the unit with 3.3V its not enough to charge the battery as it only supplies 2.7v to the battery. The board works great just remove the diode and you can use it without issues. Unfortunately it just has a bad re-charge design circuit

DS3231 RTC battery notice

This is a very good unit. There is however one problem. The descriptions says to use a CR2302 battery and it is fine if you do not plan to run this unit 24/7 from a 5v source. If you do the unit will try to charge the CR2302 and it will eventualy blow up the battery. Google this and you will find information on how to fix this problem. If you do not want to follow the track cut method change the battery to a LIR2302 which is rechargeable.
