In electronics and other awesome Maker hobbies, it’s quite often the case that heat is a bad thing, and that you typically want to dissipate or remove heat from Components effectively to avoid overheating, or even worse, thermal runaway. This is why, although heatsinks and simple fans are often the solution to heat problems, sometimes you need something stronger to pull the heat out and dissipate forcefully, and that’s where Peltier Plates like the Peltier TEC1-12715 come in, offering 40x40mm of surface area on each side and beefy but relatively easy to achieve 12V 15A max power rating.

These Peltier Plates are quite the specialised units in Electronics, which utilises clever arrays of semiconductors to take advantage of what is known as the Peltier Effect, so as to pull heat to one particular side, causing the opposite side to cool down at a surprisingly quick rate. This ultimately results in one side being extremely cold (sometimes cold enough to freeze water on contact) and the other side being extremely hot, and this unique effect can be used for all kinds of purposes, both for heating and for cooling applications. With interesting projects like coffee warmers, portable car fridges and other cool ideas being relatively easy to achieve within the limitations of each different Peltier module, we simply love to play around with these “Cool” Thermoelectric tools whenever we have an idea we want to explore.

Please Note: When using these awesome thermal transfer tools, it’s vital that you ensure sufficient cooling for the hot side, and consider incorporating a big heatsink with a reasonably strong fan to dissipate the heat from the hot side of the plate. This will ensure that it doesn’t pop or burn out unexpectedly when power is applied. Furthermore, to run a basic test and see which side is hot or cold, apply voltage from a 12V battery or similar source for between 1 and 3 seconds before removing the power, after which you should be able to carefully feel which side is warmer – but of course be careful because these can get hot FAST.
