In Electronics, in almost all of the sub-industries from computing to 3D Printing, it’s well known fact that some components are going to get hot when in operation. This is typically caused by vast number of electrical signals running through the component, and is commonly associated with components Central Processing Units (CPU’s) as well as Motor Drivers and MOSFETs.
For these kinds of hot Components, it’s often important to have Heatsink Compound like these 28g Tubes, which is typically designed to thermally couple the high-heat component with a good thermal-transfer component like a heatsink. This helps to transfer heat between the two parts, allowing the heatsink or similar component to dissipate the heat via the use of cooling fins or continuously flowing liquids – depending on whether you are utilising air-cooling or liquid-cooling.
The reason why Heatsink Compounds like this are so important is because air is a terrible medium for thermal transfer, (one of the worst, in fact) since all of the particles are spaced quite far apart from each other. Solid objects, in comparison, have particles that are situated extremely close together, which allow the heat to effectively transfer between the particles at a much more rapid pace.
This is why we typically sandwich heat-producing components and heat-dissipating components very close together, to encourage effective thermal transfer, but the problem comes in the fact that, even though these two parts may look completely flat with the naked eye, there are actually deep grooves, pits and valleys on the surface of such components – resulting in trapped air that consequently traps the heat in too.
With that in mind, heatsink compound is designed to fill up all of those tiny cracks, pits, valleys and other faults in the surfaces of the components, ensuring effective heat transfer as the particles are close together and ready to transfer the heat away to be dissipated into the air or cooling liquids.
