It is built intelligently with only 16 pins to minimize the amount of digital outputs needed from microprocessors, and works by connecting current through the rows and the ground through the columns – thus causing the LED where the row and column meet to light up. This, in conjunction with multiplexing at a high frequency, can provide a clear display of almost any kind of pixelated 8x8 image.
