Hotend Assemblies are one of the most delicate mechanical components in 3D Printing. All the action centres on the hotend, which must carefully balance extreme temperatures to ensure smooth printing. The Maker industry has seen so many different designs and styles come and go, but the all-metal models have stood the test of time. Enhanced with more benefits, the Phaetus Dragon Hotend has a complex heatsink with an inner and outer shell for strong structure and easy cooling.
The Phaetus Dragon Hotend is a very impressive looking and well-engineered hotend that borrows from a few different well-known designs, with quite a strong resemblance to the Mosquito Hotend, coupled with a bit of E3D V6 design and a sprinkle of Micro Swiss mixed in. However, despite being quite the mish-mash of different designs, it does an excellent job at reigning all of these different designs together to create a hotend that is not only excellent at laying down filament, but also extremely lightweight and fast too. This “borrowing” of various designs means that the Phaetus Dragon also offers the awesome one-handed nozzle change like the Mosquito Hotends do, with a tiny, highly thermally conductive cooling tower, braces to protect the heat break from, well, breaking, and can even be used without the Boron Nitride Heat Paste that is typically required when using the Mosquito. The Phaetus Dragon Hotend prints at an incredible 500°C.
This Phaetus Dragon hotend is the High Flow version and coloured with a smart blue. Ceramic insulation sits below the heat break, making a longer hot melt zone. Printing efficiency skyrockets with less possibility to plug the nozzle. Just as the name suggests, high flow hotends allow fast filament feeding while maintaining smooth control. After some fine tuning, these hotends work best with larger nozzles, such as the 0.6mm nozzle, which allows you to print fast with great quality.

Typical Applications for Phaetus Dragon High Flow Hotend:
When comparing the Phaetus Dragon Hotend to others on the market, it’s plain to see that it has borrowed a lot from the Mosquito Hotend design, although despite that, we feel that it definitely offers some distinct features that set it apart. It is primarily designed to replace the classic E3D V6 hotend on standard 3D Printers, but offers a high rate of flow due to the enlarged thermal mass and clever material composition, while also maintaining an extremely low weight for faster and more responsive motion.
These features, coupled with an enticingly low price, makes it one of the most accessible yet powerful upgrades for almost any stock 3D Printers, with a high level of durability and component quality that ensures it will last for far longer than just a few hundred prints. Of course, as with any aftermarket hotend, it will require some research and learning to dial it in and get what Goldilocks would label as “Just Right”, but once you’ve got your settings right, will perform like an absolute dream, whizzing about at crazy speeds (if that’s what you want) and providing you with the quality that every 3D Maker strives for.

- Lastly, the video below explains the key features of the Phaetus Dragon Hotend and the advantages of the High Flow version. Nero 3D on YouTube gives his review of the Phaetus Dragon High Flow Hotend:
Phaetus is a brand with an unrelenting focus on creating some of the highest quality 3D printing upgrades and equipment on the market. They have pioneered many fantastic designs that reimagined the hotend as we know it. Resembling the head of a sprinkler, Phaetus’ ingenious Dragon Hotend solved many of the thermal efficiency problems of other models and introduced easy one-handed nozzle interchangeability. But with the wind firmly caught in their sales, Phaetus is not stopping there!
The company began with a goal to plow into the pain points of 3D industry and come up with innovative solutions. Phaetus established a strong research and development team who are a driving force in their field. The Phaetus brand is, in fact, young in the 3D world with their first hotend showcased in 2019. But that kickoff quickly blazed into a fire as Makers recognized the ingenuity of their design. The company shot into the development of newer high-end hotends that met the needs of DIY enthusiasts and professionals in the 3D industry. The Dragon Hotend expanded into an entire range, and new models like the Dragonfly and Rapido addressed specializations into lightweight and speed. Naturally, Phaetus created nozzles to keep up with the demands of their new demanding inventions. Even dipping into an advanced range of high-temperature 3D Filaments. We are definitely invested to see where Phaetus goes next.
Hobbyist Makers and industrial professionals alike can fully appreciate all that Phaetus brings to the table. Maintaining a wide compatibility with many 3D printers, Phaetus products are simply stuffed with strength and great mechanical properties on top of ground-breaking designs that innovate 3D technology. If you love the idea of upgrading 3D printers to a premium standard of greater functionality, you will not be disappointed by the excellent quality and fun upgrades that Phaetus has to offer.
