Although we don’t typically notice it, as humans with arm blood flowing through our veins, we are actually constantly glowing, giving off a relatively bright light in the Infrared range that our human eyes are designed to filter out. However, just because we can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it’s not happening, and proof of our constantly glowing bodies can easily be detected by Electronic Sensors, and that’s basically what PIR Sensors are designed to do. PIR or Passive Infrared Sensors like this awesome little Digital PIR Motion Sensor Module are built to identify when heat is being radiated from a body (human or not) and send corresponding signals via the output to systems or microcontrollers, so as to provide extra sensing capabilities even when no visible light is apparent to us humans. With reliability that is quite tough to fool, they’re often used in applications like alarm systems and intruder detection systems, where reliability is fundamental to keeping people or possessions safe.

These Digital PIR Motion Sensor Modules are designed to the Gravity Series standard, and are built by DFRobot, which means that it will be perfectly compatible with almost all Arduino Boards and similar microcontrollers on the market. They are extremely reliable despite being relatively simple Hobbyist Electronics, and can help you build all kinds of fun or functional PIR based projects. This includes simple detection systems that can identify when humans (or cats and other warm-blooded creatures) pass by the sensing radius, heat-based control systems to keep projects safe and in-check, as well as for other applications in which thermal radiation plays a key role. It utilises the classic Fresnel Lens design to measure a average Infrared levels in an environment, and then checks against that average to detect when a big change happens or a certain threshold is met, and this way it doesn’t need to be extremely advanced, but can simply use a single point to accurately sense a large area such as a doorway, window or similar space.

This relatively basic functionality coupled with an easy to use Arduino-friendly interface, a wide 3.3V to 6V input range, as well as handy resources located in the Wiki linked below, ensures that anyone and everyone can learn to use and take advantage of this Digital PIR Motion Sensor Module, and whether you use Arduino, Raspberry Pi or even NVIDIA Jetson Nano, you can now enjoy reliable PIR sensing in all of your cool projects.

As self-proclaimed “Robo-holics”, DFRobot is a company comprised of over 100 staff members, of which 30% are engineers who love to build robots. It was started in 2008 with the goal of embracing and promoting open-source hardware, with a core focus on Arduino, Raspberry Pi and their very own LattePanda development boards. Since then, DFRobot have manufactured over 1300 unique modules, sensors and components that all work together and complement each other, allowing users like us to enjoy a full spectrum of cutting edge robotics and electronics without having to pay premium prices.

With the primary goal of developing and manufacturing great quality products, while making them accessible to as many people as possible, DFRobot are rapidly becoming one of the most common-place brands in the world of open-source robotics and electronics. With more than 1300 products developed in-house, and an impressive range of different categories and specialisations, there are few brands in the world who can compete in terms of quality, accessibility and genuine innovation.
