CAN Bus is a truly impressive protocol that, when introduced to the world, revolutionised the way in which individual parts and minor systems operate and communicate with each other within a larger system. And while this protocol was brought in particularly for the automotive industry, in times in which vehicles typically operated without Microcontrollers or primary controller boards, it has slowly gained popularity outside of this industry, with more and more use cases being brought forward that utilise the clever Communications methods employed by the CAN protocol.

This 2-Channel Isolated CAN FD Expansion HAT is an awesome little expansion board designed for Raspberry Pi Boards, and allows users to utilise the CAN protocol with a powerful microcontroller via an SPI interface, to give Makers an easy way to communicate with and control CAN Bus systems. This HAT supports both CAN2.0 and the more modern CAN FD (Flexible Data-Rate) protocols, which of course means that Makers aren’t just limited to the standard 8-byte data capacity, but can actually extend this to 64 bytes within the CAN-Frame.

If you enjoy working with CAN Bus systems, but sometimes struggle with effectively communicating with and controlling these systems, or the sub-systems within the large system, this 2-Channel Isolated CAN FD Expansion HAT is an excellent solution.

Please Note: If you are using a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ or older version board, it’s important to ensure that the CAN Interface is not creating a short on the HDMI Port. If this is the case, use the included header and spacers to give the HAT some extra clearance, so as to avoid any potential problems or damage.
