The Prusa i3 3D Printer is an awesome machine, and was essentially the model that made 3D Printing accessible for millions of 3D Makers around the world. And while it may not be the most popular 3D Printer in current times, we still feel that it’s one of the best value-for-money 3D Printers available, even to this day, due to the fact that it has a direct drive extruder, as well as the ability to be easily enclosed. This is why it’s always our number one recommended 3D Printer for the more difficult 3D Filaments like ABS and TPU – since ABS typically requires an enclosure in order to not warp or distort, while TPU is infamous for being tricky with a Bowden extruder setup – and these capabilities are about to get even better with the introduction of the exciting new Bondtech Prusa i3 MK2 Extruder Upgrade Kit!
This upgrade kit is designed to perfectly accommodate 3D Printers that follow the original Prusa i3 MK2/MK2S design, such as our In-House Prusa i3 MK2, and is built specifically to offer ultra-low weight, which directly translates into faster printing speeds. Additionally, this DDS extruder setup also features an extremely constrained feedpath, which, when coupled with the high push and pull power of the Bondtech BMG Dual Drive Gears, offers even greater filament control. These awesome features all result in better print quality, substantially reduced chances of clogging and tangling with soft or Flexible Filaments, as well as improved print speeds while still maintaining a high standard of quality.
This kit comes as separate parts and components, includes a specialised NEMA 17 Pancake Stepper Motor for even more weight reduction, and is relatively easy to assemble with the handy setup and installation guide included in the Downloads section up top. However, one aspect that is important to note is that you will need to print a few parts to fit this extruder assembly to your Prusa i3, although this is honestly quite awesome in our opinion, as most 3D Makers can print their own parts with the 3D Printers they already have. Additionally, by printing your own carriage for this extruder setup, you get to choose precisely which of the provided print designs would best cater to your unique needs as a unique Maker.
Please Note: Because we’ve developed our DIYElectronics Prusa i3 in-house, it’s important to note that, instead of 5V fans like mentioned in some guides, our Prusa i3 models utilise 12V fans. Fortunately, we have a good selection of 12V and 24V Fans available, and we suggest getting the Sunon 12V 5015 Blower Fan, as well as the Sunon 12V 4010 Axial Fan if you need to replace your current cooling fans.

As many of you DIYElectronics Prusa i3 owners will know, we love DIY Kits that we can build ourselves, as these often let us learn a whole lot about what we’re working with, while also being able to enjoy the final results – and of course it always leaves room for extra mod’s and tinkering too. This is why we love this Bondtech Prusa i3 MK2 Extruder Upgrade Kit, as it offers just enough DIY to temporarily sate the Making Urge, but also allows us to build it according to our specific needs as unique Makers, with different styles and designs being attractive to different Makers for various different reasons.
As such, it’s important to realise that you will have to build this kit yourself, but fortunately there are quite a few handy guides out there in addition to Bondtech’s Guide included at the top of this description. However, another important note to consider is that, while this kit includes the extruder assembly and stepper motor, you will need to use your own parts for certain things, such as the blower and axial fans, as well as the basic Hotend Assembly components like the cooling tower, nozzle and heater block.
Fortunately, despite requiring some new fans to fit the slightly larger design of this unit, you can in fact use the entire E3D-based hotend assembly from your current setup. We quite like this idea, as it reduces the overall cost of this upgrade, while allowing Makers to pick and choose custom parts for their machines, although it does mean that it’s a good idea to take a look at the included and non-included parts in the tables above this section, and consider also getting the other parts you need when purchasing your exiting new Bondtech Prusa i3 Upgrade Kit.
Finally, if you want to see what kinds of steps are required to setup and install this fantastic extruder upgrade, check out this really insightful Prusa i3 MK2 BMG Upgrade Kit Video by Partsbuilt 3D, which details all of the processes required for fitting and mounting the MK2 Extruder Upgrade Kit. Bear in mind that some parts may be slightly different due to the open-source nature of Prusa 3D Printers, and this user has chosen to print the entire unit rather than buying the SLS Nylon Assembly Unit provided in this kit. However, we feel like this is one of the best videos available on the topic, as it takes viewers through the entire process from start to finish:
