While one or two relaxing drinks with friends seem harmless, South Africans know to be careful of the restrictions when driving. Police patrols often keep breathalysers, but nothing stops us from keeping our own to check our alcohol levels before climbing into the driver’s seat. This Gravity Alcohol Gas Sensor measures alcohol concentrations in the air or on your breath. Designed with an easy gravity interface, the module supports mainstream controllers like Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi, allowing you to create your own breathalyser or smart detector.

The Gravity Alcohol Gas Sensor features a measuring range of 0 to 5ppm with fast accurate detection of alcohol concentrations. The module utilises electrochemistry principles to detect ethanol which is primarily present in alcoholic fumes. Typically, makers will connect LED lights or a small display to read the alcohol levels detected. A microcontroller like Arduino Uno can also turn your project into a smart device with voice alerts and wireless connection that sends notifications to your phone. The 3.3V to 5.5V voltage input range allow you to experiment with various attachments and applications.

However, the air around us consists of many elements of which some have been known to interfere with breathalyser readings. The biggest culprit among them is carbon monoxide which humans naturally release within our breath. To counteract this, the Gravity Alcohol Gas Sensor includes strong anti-interference features that increase the sensor’s sensitivity and result in stable readings. These features, in conjunction with the 2 years long lifespan of materials used to build the Alcohol Gas Sensor, make it an excellent investment for anyone who might be concerned with your intoxication levels after a night out or those of a driver of a company vehicle.
