Once you delve deeper into hobbyist electronics, it’s hard not to get exciting about the incredible possibilities that software coding opens to your projects. AI development is a fascinating aspect of electronics that was a thing of Sci-Fi for so long, but now Makers can play with AI and IoT systems in their homes for awe-inspiring results. This NVIDIA Jetson Nano Developer Kit with inbuilt storage allows you to step into learning and making AI project with little preparation and experiment with AI functions such as image classification, object detection, segmentation and speech processing.

This awesome AI & Deep Learning Development Board is designed by the world-famous NVIDIA corporation, the inventors of the world’s first GPU. Instead of focussing on graphics like the graphics cards that many of us have in our personal computers, the NVIDIA Jetson Nano utilises the extremely capable GPU for parallel computing. This allows Makers to simultaneously learn about AND make AI and machine learning. An absolute mountain-load of online support and open-source software is there to help newbies and veterans in mastering the AI world. In fact, NVIDIA have done such an impressive job at providing support and resources for this platform that they have a comprehensive “Two Days to a Demo” Tutorial Project that anyone can utilise to create an entire deep learning project from absolute scratch, in as little as two days (depending on how quickly you can grasp the concepts).

Key Features of the awesome NVIDIA Jetson Nano Developer Kit

This NVIDIA Jetson Nano Development Kit contains all you need to jump headfirst into tinkering with your first AI project. Multiple crucial accessories are included in the package, such as a 32GB USB Drive, DC Jack power cable, dual mode MIC antennas, other connection cables and a cooling fan. All you need is a computer, keyboard and mouse to hook up your new NVIDIA Jetson Nano and begin coding.

In terms of the fun capabilities of the NVIDIA Jetson Nano, this development kit is very similar to the NVIDIA Jetson Nano B01 version kit, but offers a few extra noticeable features:

  • Inbuilt 16GB eMMC Storage – while the B01 version of this board has no onboard storage, this NVIDIA Jetson Nano Development Kit offers 16GB for stable reading and writing. No extra MicroSD card is required to start up your Jetson Nano and adequate space stands ready for you to get started right away.
  • Included 32GB USB Drive for External Storage – If the onboard memory wasn’t enough, this kit includes a USB drive for more space. AI projects are notoriously heavy on storage space, especially for the more complicated projects you may want to try out. Fortunately, this development board allows 32GB with this USB drive. If you need more space still, a MicroSD card can be incorporated by modifying the module’s tree file, but we don’t recommend beginners to try this until you have a basic knowledge of how the Jetson Nano works.
  • Dual 4K Display Outputs – The NVIDIA Jetson Nano Development Kit supplies ports for dual displays of DSI and HDMI. With 4K resolution, you can enjoy the high definition of your dual displays for your advanced AI project. Paired with the dual MIPI CSI camera ports, your two displays can show you exactly what your AI is seeing and how it is interpreting that data.

The NVIDIA Jetson Nano Development Kit opens cool new possibilities for your Maker projects. With its binocular (or stereoscopic) video input, you can utilise 3D imaging in one direction, or create extremely wide-angle vision at up to 360 degrees for even more monitoring, tracking and overall visual input. The onboard storage provides a huge leap forward for a range of cool applications for you to explore with the extra storage space you have at your fingertips. This board is capable of so much more than any Arduino or Raspberry Pi. The NVIDIA Jetson Nano Development kit focuses on AI Development, parallel computing and various machine learning processes like simulation generation, object identification and classification, as well as segmentation. This makes it an ideal board for learning all the in’s and out’s of machine learning, while also being able to cater to professional applications too – allowing you to learn, create, enhance, and then start the cycle over once again as you develop your skills and ultimately master the world of AI Frameworks and Deep Learning.

Please Note: While experimenting with one of the amazing boards, we found that it was best practice to plug all of the peripherals, displays and other extras in before plugging in the power. This is because the NVIDIA Jetson Nano automatically boots up once power is plugged in, and if some peripherals aren’t connected during startup, they may not behave like you expect.
