With Motors being such prevalent in almost every part of our lives, from our washing machines to our mobile devices, it’s quite easy to see that they can be used for all kinds of different applications. However, while a lot of typical motors are designed to simply spin when power I applied to them, Servo Motors are slightly different, and instead of simply spinning, they are built to spin to exact rotational orientations, making them great for fine rotational or linear positioning control, as well as powerful, short movements for applications like robotics and functional projects.

These DFRobot 2kg Clutch Servos are specialised servo motors that offer a 180° rotation and up to 2kg of holding torque, but feature a unique clutch system that helps keep the motor healthy by allowing for extra forced rotation without damaging the motor. This means that, during standard operations, you can twist and turn the servo horn all you like without breaking it, after which it will conveniently reposition itself and then continue with standard operations once again. This is then further complemented with integrated electronic protection as well, helping to prevent the motor from burning out or becoming otherwise damaged when the clutch is activated, while also offering an automatic shutdown feature that activates if the motor is being held or blocked in one position for five seconds.

These cool features make this a great servo motor for advanced users who want to take advantage of the unique clutch functionality, but also for beginners who are still learning about servo motors and how to use them properly, and with such a low price tag attached to what we consider to be a relatively advanced unit, it’s really a great choice for anyone and almost any project too.

Typical Applications for these DFRobot 180° 2kg Clutch Servos:

The unique clutch capabilities of this servo makes it perfect for robotics and other applications in which you don’t always know precisely how your motors are going to be used, such as with robotic hands, grabber claws and other projects that may be subject to brand new variables in each test run. In these situations, instead of having to carefully calibrate the servo motors according to what is being grabbed, for example, these clutch servo motors can apply the grip, employ the use of the clutch if the item being grabbed is too big, and hopefully still grab the object with a pretty strong force, rather than either burning out, breaking or letting go entirely as a typical servo might in the same situation.
