This Analog Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor from DFRobot is a very simple but clever little module that is capable of accurately measuring the moisture or humidity levels in soil. This allows Makers like you to build your own plant-health monitoring system, which lets you know precisely when your plant needs to be watered. This of course can be adjusted via a microcontroller like an Arduino Board, and can even be connected up to a watering system to automate the watering process as well.

Despite being labelled as the V1.0 of DFRobot’s soil moisture sensors, this module actually features much greater corrosion resistance than the soil moisture sensor V2.0 included with the EcoDuino Plant Watering Kit. This greatly extends the lifespan of the V1.0 compared to the V2.0, and allows you to leave the sensor in relatively wet soil without being too concerned about the corrosion from the water. And finally, because this module comes equipped with DFRobot’s specialised Gravity port, it is capable of being used with a very wide range of different controllers and shields as well.

Typical Applications for Analog Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor:

Because of the harsh environment that these sensors are placed in, with corrosive minerals and almost constant moisture working to corrode away the conductive metals, they are not expected to have a long lifespan. As such, these individual units are perfect for replacing corroded soil sensors from the classic EcoDuino Plant Watering Kit, with a design that should surpass the lifespan of the Soil Sensor V2.0. However, this unit is not just a replacement, as the Gravity PH2.0-3P connector and relatively wide input voltage range allows it to be used with a good selection of different development platforms, including Arduino Boards as well as Raspberry Pi.

And finally, to ensure that you are inserting the sensor into the soil to the right depth, please be sure to look at the final image above, which demonstrates what depth the sensor should be inserted.

As self-proclaimed “Robo-holics”, DFRobot is a company comprised of over 100 staff members, of which 30% are engineers who love to build robots. It was started in 2008 with the goal of embracing and promoting open-source hardware, with a core focus on Arduino, Raspberry Pi and their very own LattePanda development boards. Since then, DFRobot have manufactured over 1300 unique modules, sensors and components that all work together and complement each other, allowing users like us to enjoy a full spectrum of cutting edge robotics and electronics without having to pay premium prices.

With the primary goal of developing and manufacturing great quality products, while making them accessible to as many people as possible, DFRobot are rapidly becoming one of the most common-place brands in the world of open-source robotics and electronics. With more than 1300 products developed in-house, and an impressive range of different categories and specialisations, there are few brands in the world who can compete in terms of quality, accessibility and genuine innovation.
